After the recent barrage of ads on their site, Photobucket is now demanding $9.99 month for linking or $39.99 month for 3rd party hosting. They can forget it. I guess some of my pictures will disappear from The Grumble.

That's Baloney.

Worse than Facebook. So far.

The two things I do with Photobucket are 1) edit pics, then save as image files to my laptop and 2) edit pics and then highlight the address to share on here. Does your note mean that they're now charging for the latter?

From everything I can tell, Yes.

Photobucket now = something else in a bucket.

I guess I may as well just forget it exists. Anything I have on it is somewhere else already, and if they want to charge for access to what I have on there, then guess what - they aren't getting a dime.

I got it so my pics would have web addresses for posting here (rather than postings as thumbnails). Then, I kept it because it's so simple, I can easily use it. Has the G's format change meant that photos shared here can in larger sizes from computer files, or do they still just post as thumbnails? Are there other free photo-hosting sites one can use to establish a web address for photos?

Nothing "free" is really Free. But here's an article to peruse and maybe you can find one that is agreeable. Not sure yet what I'm going to do. I have free, practically unlimited storage through our paid website, but it's nowhere as easy to use as the established sites with apps just for that purpose...

The Grumble for a long time has given the option when you post a photo or image to post thumbnail or full image, even way before the recent server change.
I quit posting photos from Photobucket long ago since the Grumble made it much easier to post them almost directly.
I can drag a photo from Bing or somewhere else to my desktop and then just upload to the Grumble.
Once in a while, rarely, the Grumble might tell you that the file is too large so I just take a screen shot of the image and slightly reduce it.
I'm on a Mac.
(keep in mind that I am a very experienced framer, but on the computer, I am a monkey banging on the keys..o_O)

You can upload from your own file or from your desktop and just choose "full image " instead of "thumbnail".
Like this one I just plucked from my desktop...

How do you like my new signature? I wonder if there is a way to block Photobucket's URL from the Grumble?

Wouldn't that just punish the people who still use it?

Who might that be, here on the Grumble, at $39.99 per month for 3rd party hosting? Every single Photobucket link on the Grumble has that ad. If thee is anybody who cares to keep them, I say too bad!

This is the only place that I really used it for and I haven't used it in quite a while.

So I just deleted all my images and deleted my account also.

Thankfully I had my album set to private. I took a quick look at the terms of service and saw that any photos that are public can let anyone order a print, shirt or whatever from Photobucket.

If their URL is banned, would it keep folks who use that site as a web address for pics from being able to share them?

There are plenty of free alternatives; at least for now. Here are a few: https://www.lifewire.com/free-image-hosting-sites-3486329

Photobucket is still listed.

Another alternative is a cheap website. Some as cheap as $5/month with 100GB of storage. With your own site, you never have to worry about what your host is going to do with your images. You can host your own email as well and a website for your shop.

I like it a lot!#

I have huge amounts of web space i could use for this kind of thing, unfortunately I have no idea how to use it :)

I back up all my photos on Dropbox and pay $100 a year because I exceed the free allocation. Still worth it to have an online backup in case my house burns down and I can share them with people I trust like family via the sharing facility.

I-Cloud also offers limited free hosting with options to buy more but I could never figure out how to use it.

Just now found an e-mail from Photobucket that landed in the spam of an e-mail that I rarely use. Says that if I don't change by Nov. 30th, my account will be frozen/lost/closed (pick one), so am very glad I found it. I have almost 8000 photos on the site, so am planning to pay for the $100.00/yr. plan just to maintain access to them. Maybe during this next year, I can transfer them to another site. If I choose that plan, which allows for unlimited sharing, but no 3rd party hosting. Does that mean I can save it to my computer and share it, but not highlight the web address, then copy and paste to a site, or is it something different?

I often edit photos there, (even though I know it doesn't result in much printable quality), save to my computer, than upload from my computer to Facebook. Is that something I'll still be able to do, if I don't sign up for their 3rd party hosting plan?

For $100/year maybe its time for you to get a website. Depending on the site you get, you can have enough storage for all your photos and you and Dirk can host a site for your shop. Almost all of the photos of my own that I post are hosted on my site. And if I move to a new host, which I have done a few times, the photos get moved to the new site.

As for photo editing, that's a horse of a different color.

Right.

But PB made it easy to do half a job on a whole bunch of stuff. Which was good enough for 99% of the population for 99% of their stuff.

That's me. I know the resulting edits aren't on par with 'real' photo-editing programs, but it's easy enough that I'll actually do it.

The 'get a website' idea is interesting. Hubby taught himself to code this year, and has built a simple, functional website for his day job. If we had one, I could park photos there for when a web address is needed. Of my 7800 photos on PB, about 95% are personal, and I don't want to lose what I've done (ha ha...such as it is). If I sign up for a year, at least that gets us past Christmas before I have to figure it out. Maybe then, I'll try flickr, or one of the other sites suggested here. I still have the original photos on my laptop, and we have cloud back-up, so that's good.

The website solution is relatively "cheap", but not necessarily "easy". Hence my earlier comment about the PB solution being easy and good enough.

Most current web hosts make it moderately easy to upload files. But for that to happen automatically (i.e. when you press the "shutter release" on the "camera"), in a reduced format that is suitable for internet sharing, is a whole 'nother story.

When I have to take a picture to send to someone I'd much rather use my iPhone entirely. Because it's so easy to "insert photo" and then decide on "small/med/lg/orig" and send it off rather than the only option from my PC of attaching the original file (unless I open and edit it to something different).
