I have always used 3/16 but again today I have it buggered up and need to start over.
Does it make sense to use 1/2 in foamboard.

Depends upon the frame - are you really going to use that deep of a frame? I don't know if you are using glass but if you are there has to be a spacer also.
Is it needlepoint, rather than cross-stitch? Are you using only the foam core? Is it bowing?
I like to make a "sandwich" of 3/16" AFFC and 4-ply rag or alpha board and stretch over that. It gives a bit more thickness and rigidity.
