This is a shadow box made to hold 8 oil lamps that represent the historical progression of oil lamps from the middle east.
We chose an Arquati Moulding "P4023" for it's rustic look. It, of course is not deep enough to accommodate the 2 1/4 inch height of the tallest lamp.
So we stacked 2 mouldings together ... this too was not quite deep enough.
So, I laid the bottom moulding on it's side so the top became the side, then I ripped the bottom moulding at 5/8ths of an inch to use as my center spacer. This gave me the depth that I needed.
The difficult part was to align the pieces so that they looked as one. It works well as a single unit now. The center line giving it all an assembled purposeful look instead of a 'simply stacked' look.
A deep brown linen fabric for the backing and the shadow box sides to tie it all together internally letting the objects stand out, 'pop'. The fabric is mounted to masonite, the rough side.
The objects are not the 'originals', they are reproductions. The customer, an ancient history, professor had them made as copies from the originals which he keeps in a vault.
The pieces are mounted simply with silicone (at the customer's request)..
To get a good hold the fabric has been removed from behind the objects so that the adhesive is adhered to the backing board.
Topped off with museum glass and fit to hang it is a delightful museum quality representation of 1500 years of oil lamp history.
