379 framers and $11,041.00 for FACTS

I'm happy to see that we "framers" as well as "owners"are contributing. $30.00 to most framers is equal to 2 weeks worth of auto fuel for transportation to work. What I'm trying to say is that it is a lot to contribute and it shows they care. It also shows that they care enough about framing to monitor online forums. Word of mouth from one framer to another is one way the word is going to get spread a about FACTS.

Everybody (framers, owners, suppliers) needs to work together equally to get this done. We're lucky we have the Don Pierce's and Nona Powers' (who see the bigger picture) to keep the ball rolling. It is a giant step in the industry, one that many other professions haven't hurdled.

Mariam Zieminski says in her note with her check, "This is an issue that is vital to integrity. FACTS provides the standards that we need, in a format that we can access." She's right.

Someone suggested we could do another set of standards if FACTS goes away, but these are so good and so uncompromised, framers need them much more than they know. No more acid free misunderstanding, no more cotton vs. purified wood pulp nonsense, we can expand them into other areas, why spend the money and time to do them again, when they are so good now? Doesn't make any sense at all. For a $30 check and support from the rest of the industry, we can make them work for us now.

I realize framers are used to being isolated and unconnected to each other because we work in our own businesses, but in order for the industry to make that leap to professionalism, we need the standards and guidelines we now have and we need to figure out how to make them work better for us. All it will take is enough framers to say yes, I care. It's important. Tell the rest of the industry you care by sending a check and do it today.

Thanks to these framers with vision:

Nona, the Gulf Coast chapter of PPFA met tonight here in Houston. I agreed to give a little background on "The Nona Campaign" and share some of the comments and observations from The Grumble and HH. We encouraged attendees to write a check before they left the meeting to show support of FACTS. The last I heard we had received at least 13 checks hopefully with more to come. So be watching for an envelope from our chapter full of more FACTS support from Texas!

I would encourage everyone to communicate, communicate, communicate on this issue. I believe the support is there if we can get the word out to as many framers as possible.

The Wisconsin Chapter decided, at a board meeting this evening (which I attended as a guest,) to include the FACTS letter furnished by Rick Bergeron in its newsletter later this month.

The trade-off is that I'm now on the board of directors.

The North Texas put the letter in the current issue of "The Star", our chapter newsletter. I received it last Saturday, so lets hope the checks start coming in. Thanks to Fred Wolff at FPF Moulding for putting it in the newsletter.

I was out of town for a couple of days so wasn't able to post checks. A lot came in. We are cooking here. I received three from my 60 letters I mailed, so far. I hope for many more and think I will get them.

I hope your all writing and calling and giving every framer the opportunity to help keep standards and guidelines in our industry. Lois at Superior Acrylic Frame Co. in Riverside, the lady who is giving the class in Atlanta on plastic, (by the way, you want to take it because she is very creative as well as technically knows all there is to know about acrylic sheeting) is sending out flyers to her customers explaining what FACTS is and how framers can show support by sending me a check. She did this on her own because even as a distributor she sees the need.

We don't have a lot of time here and we all, every single one of us, need to write the check if we haven't, then we need to get others to write a check also. People are doing that and it's wonderful. This is all of us making this happen. It's not just me, it's not any one person, it's framers who care about the professionalism of their industry. There are several people working very hard, Jim, Ron, Jo to name just a few plus all the people who have posted and written checks. When I get to Atlanta with the 1,000 checks, those people will deserve the thanks of every framer for generations.

I've gotten back 4 responses so far from the 60 letters I sent out. If we all just get 10 each, we will have more than the 1,000 we need. I don't want to take 500 checks to Atlanta, even though that would be impressive. It will be much more convincing if 1,000 framers stand up and say yes, standards and guidelines are important. FACTS gives the professional framer an important tool. Go to www.artfacts.org to read the documents FACTS has created. Don't let all that important work go to waste. It must be kept alive, improved, expanded, taught, widely published. Something every framer can use every day. Send your check, ask another 10 framers to send theirs.

Suzanne Hollibaugh was part of my committee writing the Consumer Guide to Conservation Framing our San Diego PPFA chapter did in the eighties when the whole "acid free" mess created so much confusion over what was a good board for preservation framing and what wasn't. The subject was confusing to framers and to consumers. The members of the committee did independent research trying to find out what had what in it, what was harmful, what was not and it was very difficult to find the truth beyond hype. Do you realize we are still in just about the same place today? Read over the ads, how many do you think are really, totally true? We did the flyer, with the amount of information we could find but it was no where near as good as the work FACTS has done. Our flyer we wrote and our chapter members used helped explain the difference to everyone but FACTS is a very good, well written group of documents, that if used to their potential, with the total industry supporting and using it, could help every framer know for sure how, why and with what. With 1,000 framers stating that they think the work is important and they will support it, FACTS can be the tool we all need. State clearly, YES framers want and need FACTS, send me a check for $30 and call, write or visit other framers in your area and get them to do the same.

I sent one of my 60 letters to Sue and here came her check today. I knew she still cared!! Do you? All of these framers care and have sent checks:

MORE CHECKS!! There are so many great framers who do want what FACTS has to offer them; professionalism, a way to get answers, training, sales help, and the confidence to know they are doing it right. As soon as we get FACTS on it's feet, and we can do that if enough framers thinks it's important, then we can figure out ways to get FACTS to be and do even more. It takes money, but more than that, it takes commitment. YES it's important, YES, I will subscribe and support FACTS. Send your check today or if you've already done that, get others to send theirs. It will take the help of everyone to get 1,000 checks by Sept 20th. No one person can set by and let others do it. In this case, we all need to do it. Please help and you help us all.

Send a $30 check, or whatever you want the amount to be. The amount is not as important as the fact that I get 1,000 checks. Each check represents a framer who wants FACTS. There are approximately 17,000 framers and if each of us on the Internet get 10 of them to send a check, we will exceed 1,000. We'll save FACTS and we'll show how powerful this medium can be. I have almost 200 and they are in a big envelope. I will need two or three boxes for 1,000. Dragging that many checks to a meeting of concerned people in Atlanta will be impressive. Help me reach the goal.

If your not sending a check it means you don't want FACTS and couldn't care less. At least that's the way I read it.

These framers care and put up their money to show it.

We can do this, we will do this. It's too important to not do it. Use
Rick's letter, send out Alice Gibson's article, do whatever it takes. Time

Checks for FACTS. Thanks framers, as Margaret wrote, "Even the naysayers will thank you someday." That is the truth, plain and simple, except, the ones they will be thanking are all the pioneers who had the vision to send a check, including Margaret. There are too few of us right now, we need a lot more and fast, but we can see what is good for us, now we need to convince others. Get on the phone and call the framers in your area. I sent out 60 letters, have gotten back 6 checks, I just got two more, but now I'm going to call those 60 framers and tell them to do it NOW!!!! They want to join this incredible list of great framers who do care:

I can't read the name, but the framer sent over $30. Almost enough for two framers. We've had people sending money for employees so I'm going to go back and count all of the checks that are for a lot more than the $30 and count them for other framers. If some people believe in FACTS enough to send way more than $30, then that should count. Let it count for framers who aren't as progressive in their thinking. Sound fair?

I went through the checks and counted everyone who had paid more than $30, divided it by $30 and we now need 753 checks. Still a lot. Our goal is $30,000 and we have $7,420.37 Going through the checks reinforces, to me, that there are 1,000 framers who care, it's just a matter of getting to them before Sept 20th. Kind of looks like a high mountain to climb, but I do still think we can do it, we just need to do it. Several chapters have written about FACTS in their newsletter. The PPFA did a report on FACTS, Picture Framing Magazine published an editorial on FACTS so the word is out there, it's just getting the framers to set down and actually write the check and send it.

It was pointed out to me that framers should be counted, not monye, at any rate, for now this is the correct count, except it really isn't, because several of the checks I recieved were for mom and pop shops and I only counted one even though both of them were sending the check. This gets very muddy. I just know we are no where near 1,000.

It seems inconceivable to me that we will not get 1,000 framers who care about professionalism and who won't send me a check for $30 to prove it. Just cannot for the life of me, believe such a thing is possible. Some people have sent checks even when they couldn't afford to and that shows real dedication to their profession. How come these people can have such vision when those of you who haven't sent a check have so little? Amazing.

I got another check from my 60 letters. YES!! That makes 7. Send out some letters, make some calls, it works. It would only take 100 of us to get 10 each to reach 1,000. Don't wait for others to do it, you do it. Follow up with a call.

Mr. Greg Goman sent enough for himself and 5 others. Thanks Mr. Goman. Susan Ohlendorf sent one for her and one for someone else, and I received another check from my 60 letters which makes 8 I've gotten back. I almost have my 10, I hope your working on yours. I made some calls yesterday and I'll be getting more; it seems people will, they just haven't yet. At the Greater San Diego PPFA meeting on the 5th I should get more because no one is getting out of that room without writing me a check if they have not done so already. :) The crowds will part as I walk through huh?

This weekend I'll go through and actually count the framers, mom's and pop's who have subscribed instead of checks or money. The framers are what count here and the mom's should count just as much as the pop's, or the significant others or the children of, or whatever else the combination of a business is. The one thing I do know is they are great people with a lot of faith and encouragement and a need for FACTS. We will make it, just keep plugging along!!

Rick was on the committee I headed in the 80's writing a Consumer Guide to Conservation Framing flyer for framers to use in their shops to help counter the acid free and museum confusion. Framers would advertise they were doing museum framing, but when the jobs were taken apart, I don't believe any museum would really spec a job that way. With FACTS, the guide is obsolete. Anyone can go online and find out how a piece of art should be framed, plus a lot more. Keep the checks coming and get others to send theirs. Rick was another person I sent a letter to, didn't get a check so I called him. That makes 9. See, it works.

More checks. I realize many have given up, but that's a mistake. The news is out there now and it wasn't when we started. Think of how many more people have heard of FACTS now than had before? Make some calls, give all framers a chance to subscribe. I just went to the FACTS website and made a sheet we are going to use in the educators meeting and my lectures. There is so much information on that website. How can we let it die? How? It's way to valuable for the industry and for each of us as framers. Go, take a look. www.artfacts.org

We will be able to put a box in the Nielsen Bainbridge booth to collect checks, plus I will speaking about FACTS three different times during the show. Please stop by and encourage others to come and deposit checks in the boxes. We need to get 6 or 7 hundred before Atlanta and if we do, we can finish the count before Sunday morning if we all work at getting the word out. I will have a flyer encouraging people to subscribe to FACTS. Would some of you who are good writers send me what you think the flyer should say? I want a very convincing flyer telling people why they want FACTS and why they want to subscribe. It has to be short and definite. Not a lot of words. Concise. Help me with it please because I tend to be too wordy. (Who me???)

Raphael's will have a box in their booth also. I'm firming up other locations. Is there someone out there who could make the boxes on stands out of foamboard? Someone driving to the show. We need 6 or 8 boxes with slits for envelopes or checks. Jim is swamped but said he could print out signs.

We need a few more checks, but if we can get this mnay from one PPFA chapter meeting, you can to. Come on, ask, cajole, twist arms, smile sweetly, talk passionatly because you DO CARE, but get them to send a check or write you one on the spot then send them all to me.

I sat and counted the people who wrote checks, both mom and pops and the total money and as of this minute, we have 332 framers and $9,631 for FACTS. We are about 1/3 of the way to saving FACTS. If we can get over or around a total of 600, I know we can get the rest at the show. So many more know about it now, it should be easier to get people to subscribe.

Several distributors are sending out notices with their bills so that should help. In the end it's going to be up to us. I got the last of the 10 framers I pledged from my 60 letters. Seems like it should be more, but they say 10% is good. Apathy is a hard thing to break. If you haven't called framers after you sent letters, do so, because it does help. A couple of the framers who said they would send checks did so after our local meeting. Rick from Coer d'Alene told me a distributor up there Terry Farrell, had sent out letters to his customers (MFA, Inc.) and one person who sent in a check did so after receiving the letter. It reminded them. By the way, Terry had subscribed to FACTS without telling me who he was. I find that remarkable. He's not the only one to have done that. We need checks, anyone in the industry can subscribe and if you care about the professionalism of framing, you will support framers and FACTS.

I did get several checks in the mail on Saturday. These framers care about their industry and have stood up for FACTS. We all thank you. (These are included in the current count.)

Hello Nona,
I have my check in the mail. I have been busy this summer, and don't visit the grumble often, but respect what you, Jim , and others are doing.
After reading as much of this thread as time would allow, I feel that a generalized description of FACTS would be extremely beneficial. I also think that,if neccessary, more funds are needed, (maybe suppliers, although a bit scary for them possibly)to get a copy into as many framer's hands as possible, for their comprehension.
I am sure it would not be unreasonable to add this website, or HH's to the info sent for them to call upon if they need questions answered...
I understand the need for these guidelines, but many may not. I know many who made sceptical remarks about conservation framing when it first became knowledge. They thought it was a bunch of bull, designed to give us a higher-end product to sell.
Some of my sales reps have said the same. That buffered regular mat is pretty much the same as museaum rag mat. WOW
I know, and have known, this is not true since I began painting. Even so called "acid-free" paper that was cheap, is now yellow, sitting in my studio, unsold. I can also see all my scrap matboard sitting in my HUGE shelf, which one is not browned, and which one is still white. Let's not mention the pictures I have seen that are actually damaged from matboard.
If OUR suppliers do not have to answer to us, than who do they answer to. I am not trying to get down on anyone in particular, but I have heard things that do not make it easy for me to believe in the business I work for.
If my reps, or anyone that I deal with for my product, do not know what I am striving for in my business, than I am not so sure my customers do.
These facts will give us control over our product, as well as make us the true "experts" of our field. Some may be afraid of that qualification, albeit, not even neccessary. But I for one want to be held to the highest standard for the profession that I am in.
If indeed, FACTS can help me achieve that standard, I am all for it.

Lots more money and wonderful framers who sent the checks, many for much more than $30. One person sent less, but said more would come when possible. The standards are so important that even though the framer couldn't afford to send any, at least some had to be sent. That is an example of the dedication framers have to their industry. That's why when I show some of the letters, all of the checks from so many places from so many framers, the rest of the industry has to take it seriously. If we fail to save FACTS, as I said, it's not because framers don't care. It's because we couldn't get to enough in the time allowed.

This is the final count before I go, because I fly out tomorrow morning. My husband will tell me what we get between now and Sunday morning when the fate of FACTS will be decided and I'll post it Saturday evening. I will also post whether we accomplished our goal of saving FACTS or not. Hopefully the people in the room at the meeting will pledge the help we need. I know we will get the rest of the funds for FACTS from framers, but it will take a little longer than I had hoped. I don't feel like we failed to reach our goal, I feel the Internet, even though a powerful tool, did not have quite wide enough reach to get to as many framers as we needed. The other media, newsletters, magazines, will work, but it will take more time. Did you all read Jim Millers piece in Picture Framing Magazine on FACTS? I'm sure there are people who have read that and read this and have not subscribed and I'm very sorry you have not because you truly are not thinking the situation through. Think about the history of this industry, how much standards have been needed and honesty in advertising, how can you not have had that check to me immediately? OH well, everyone who had the foresight and hindsight to recognize how badly FACTS is needed and the faith to know it can be even more than it has been, you sent checks and I'm here to tell you that someday, the industry will recognize your contribution, not just to FACTS but to the whole industry.

These people cared enough about the industry they work in to send a check, to support FACTS:
