Anyone like Thryv?

Tim da Prez

Thryv (formerly Dex, YP, Yellow Pages) is hitting me up for managing software for my business. Things like emailing clients, monitoring my web presence, appointment booking, social media... I wondered if anyone has used them and what their feeling was on ROI?

Frankly, my business isn't so big that I feel all that stuff is necessary. I just got a call from Hibu today telling me they are no longer going to print a book. It's going to be all digital. The rep explained how they have all these tools to drive people to my website, make the website better for mobile devices, etc. All for a price considerably more than I'm paying now. She asked how close to our production capacity were we running. I told her about 90% most days. I got the impression even she thought the money would be wasted. I'm going to turn them down.

The ongoing assumption is you need to have a really sparkling web presence or you'll go out of business by the end of the year. I've been framing for close to 35 years and get more business from reputation than anything else.

So many of these web marketing companies promote themselves on the basis of driving traffic to your website and my stock response was always to say that clicks on a website don't equal feet on my carpet. Like any advertising the only thing you can be sure of is the monthly bill they will send you.

There is not a lot of benefit in advertising all over the world, even all over the country, when you know that only people located in your fairly close vicinity are going to actually come to you.

If they used to be YP, I wouldn't use them for anything. YP used to make cold calls to get a "yes" from someone at the business as consent to paid print listings and then "slam" the phone bill of the company or send the bills to the company in the hope that they will relent and pay it. Any company whose origin is the field of scam artistry doesn't get my business.

I signed up for Thryv for one year because of a tough sell through my Dex YP rep. It was a waste of money and I cancelled it. I use Constant Contact to send out info to my customers and felt much of what they offered was duplicating what I already was doing. I've learned to say "No"!!!
