Must be in town to promote his movie. He did a few pieces down here in LA for the premiere a week or two ago. Also did a piece in Sundance when it showed there.

Speaking of, his movie "Exit Through The Gift Shop" is very good and I would highly recommend it to anyone involved or with an interest in the contemporary art world. It's not just a documentary about street art, it actually raises some good questions about the sociological aspects of contemporary art and what determines it's worth.

So.....got this idea whilst talking with PaulSF on FB - anyone feel up to creating a nice gaudy closed corner frame in Photoshop to meld with that Graffiti? That would so totally rock and my PS skills are in the stage of infancy so I shan't attempt it.

    Anyone?

Gee, am I the only person that considers this a form of vandalism? I don`t care who this guy is, I wouldn`t want THAT(well, ok this is a funny one:) ) done on MY building.............L.(eww...looks like blood spatter too!)

Vandalism? Well, yes and no. When all they do is tag something with a gang name - yes it is vandalism - when they make "art" - it can be pretty cool. I have painted both frames and canvas with red spatters (in my Jackson Pollack phase) and Banksy's rendering of the young boy is pretty sweet.

My late friend Mark Freeland began his art career staying up all night painting huge murals on walls - he got arrested and made it into the newspaper on his first attempt - then people started hiring him. He ended up painting on 12" squares of plywood but he had an entire huge room of his artwork in the Albright Knox Art Gallery before he passed away - and they have a little show of his work every year as well.

It's totally vandalism. The graffiti artists themselves even know this, that's why they go out under the cover of night or in disguises. As far as the business owners whose buildings are painted, most just paint over them, as I do my building here in LA that gets graffiti'd on a regular basis.

As far as Banksy's pieces go though, he's such a high profile draw people come from all over to see them, which might even indirectly lead to increased business in the building it's on. In his hometown of Bristol he went from having multiple warrants out for his arrest to having his graffiti pieces deemed cultural landmarks and preserved.

One enterprising person in LA recently removed an entire piece of wall containing a Banksy piece and auctioned it off for a healthy sum, over six figures I believe.

I have a customer that is an avid Banksy fan and we have framed some of his stuff. He would love the attention all this is getting on the G.

    Thanks for sharing!

people who collect Banksy artwork, have been amazing customers
who want the best materials possible for their prints.

Id even get one myself if I could afford one

We just framed this new print with a Roma Lavo and museum glass

I would LOVE to have this done on the building where my store is. I would beg him to do it, and I would send press releases out to every media outlet within 100 miles.

    I second that!

A friend and part time intern of our shop owns a screen printing business. This weekend Shepard Fairey "OBEY" did a mural on the side of their building. It was pretty awesome.

Their website has some pics if you want to check it out

That's VERY cool! You know, Fairey's Obama poster is now hanging in the Smithsonian. Right after they added it to the collection, he was arrested on an outstanding warrant for tagging.
