What is the best adhesive to use to hold a 4" square plaster tile in an open frame. Customer wants it attached to matboard without anything showing to hold in place. Will hang in a frame without glass

Matboard does not take well to tile adhesive in my experience.
I've done something like your project, by cutting an opening in the matboard a bit smaller than the tile, and inserting a piece of masonite into the opening to glue the tile to. I'd use a tile adhesive from a hardware store. No idea what the name of the product is.

thanks, sounds like a good idea. Are there mounting strips that may work? I know over time adhesives may deteriorate. A local vendor suggestion was good ole Maxim glue since its only a 4" square plaster tile, but im skeptical.

I would glue it to a wood block thick enough to get screws in without hitting the tile. This way it can be unfixed
complete with the block when (not if) the matboard needs replacing. o_O
