*BEWARE OF RECENT SCAMS TO FRAME SHOPS*

But there were no spelling errors. That alone would lead me to want to invest in that company.

OTOH, this is the weirdest one I've seen.

I had a novel attempt to scam me a few days ago - the "offer" even came by Fax which got my antennae quivering for a starter.

It had what looked like the Yellow Pages logo on the top and a heading of Yellow Page - Free Facebook. The blurb went on to explain that "Yellow Page" would give me a free Facebook business page which would bring me untold wealth and all I had to do was fax back my acceptance. The wording was obviously designed to make it sound as if this was a privilege I had earned by advertising with Yellow Pages.

Anyway closer examination revealed that the Logo was a reverse version of the Yellow Pages one - the fingers were walking the wrong way. The name was "Yellow Page" not "Yellow Pages" and in fine print at the bottom I agreed to pay them $200 per month for two years for my "free" Facebook page.(Correct me if I am wrong but I thought Facebook was free anyway??)

One more for the round metal file on the floor.

This is more of an attempted malware type of attack.

Since I don't have any loan application in with Citi Bank I know it's not legit, but if I were in process and expecting paperwork I might very well have opened it, although the "To" is our general sale email address, not anyone in particular so probably not...

The "From" in the header matches the info in the body of the email.

    Attachment of .zip type included.

That is the key. Never ever, ever open any kind of attachment unless you are absolutely sure that it is from someone you personally know. I don't know of any legitimate company that sends attachments anymore because 99.9999999999999999% of them are malware.

  9. David N Waldmann

David N Waldmann SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

We send attachments every day. All of our documents are "printed" as PDFs. There's little I hate more than an "Invoice" that prints on two pages because of email formatting.

We get attachments from a large number of suppliers, including PFM, McMaster, Lands' End and National Car Rental. And we receive attachments from our customers with regularity as well, just this morning I got one from Yale.

Common sense is a definite requirement...

  10. Larry Peterson

Attachments are one thing, but does anyone legit send zip files? Maybe for photos and other larger items, but documents tend to come in as pdfs.

  13. David N Waldmann

David N Waldmann SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Not very often. The only good reason to send "normal" photos as a zip file would be so that they are all in one place. Since jpgs are already in a compressed format they don't zip very well.

I recently had to send some data files to our software support people and the stuff compacted down to less than 10% of the original file size which made it very feasible to email. Otherwise I would have had to ftp it or use Dropbox or some such thing.

I'm a big fan, too. They have been providing the services since 1997. My smartphone automatically uploads any newly taken photos to it, so they're available on all other devices (desktop pc at home, laptop, office pc). It's nice to know that everything is backed up to the cloud, in case my phone is misplaced.

Maybe I just look dumb but I have been getting a lot of these gambling systems lately:

    http://the-money-mark.com/

I have visited the site and there are no nasties lurking there.

It sounds plausible and is actually quite well written but follows the usual pattern of asking for a relatively minor "investment" and promising regular rewards.

My bet is that if there were any "software glitches" in online casinos they would be fixed pretty smartly but I wonder where the "sting" is for the guy pushing this?

It's pretty amazing that they are doing manual submissions.

We've been getting solicitations (the one I recall was for Ugg boots) through our website. We have Recaptcha so unless they are getting really smart it's a person sitting there doing the submissions one at a time.

  24. Rick Bergeron - CPF

Rick Bergeron - CPF SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Can't remember where, but I read the Captcha algorithm had been broken.

Our solution was to put a "Hidden" field in the Contact Us page. The bots are trained to put 'something' in every field on the page. Test the hidden field. If it is blank, then it must be a human entering the information. If the hidden field contains anything, then it must be a bot. Send a "success" indication back to the bot but either ignore or delete the submission.

After doing that, we can count on a single hand the number of spam solicitations via the "Contact Us" page/script. Prior to that, it was several handfuls a day.

That solution also saves the actual users from having to contend with the Captcha field.

An enhancement to the hidden field was a timer so that when a bot got smart and left the hidden fields blank, if the form is filled too quickly, similar action would be taken.

One site I use has a photo of a couple of the Captcha numbers so it can't be automated. The numbers are segments of home address numbers on the sides of houses. There is the JPEG and some squigly numbers after it.

    Dear Manager,
(If you are not the person who is in charge of this, please forward this to your CEO,Thanks)
This email is from China domain name registration center, which mainly deal with the domain name registration and dispute internationally in China.
We received an application from Huatong Ltd on December 12, 2013. They want to register " bluegrassframes " as their Internet Keyword and " bluegrassframes .cn "、" bluegrassframes .com.cn " 、" bluegrassframes .net.cn "、" bluegrassframes .org.cn " domain names etc.., they are in China domain names. But after checking it, we find "bluegrassframes " conflicts with your company. In order to deal with this matter better, so we send you email and confirm whether this company is your distributor or business partner in China or not?

Did anyone get a quote request from "Don Lambert" recently? We have had 3 of these in the past month, from 3 names on the list below.

It looks real, but I took some time to research the inquiry The email domain comes back to an unregistered domain for sale, the IP traces to Ghana, the phone # traces to a voice over ip line which could be anywhere in the world - although it is registered to be from Colorado, and the physical address is that of a law firm - NOT an orphanage.

After searching for the name, I see the same scam is happening in other industries (framers, label companies, kitchen countertop companies, etc) and they are having people ship product to QATAR, via a mail forwarding company. (which happens long before it is discovered that a stolen credit card number was used to pay for everything, and the product is out of US law reach... so the vendor gets charged back for the full amount)

They have been sending a similar scam email with names Don Lambert, Marcus Greg, Elvis Barton, David Brooke, James Cage, Iverson Green, Steve Larry. and John Smith. Most of them are using hotmail, gmail, or yahoo addresses.

    Please don't be a victim. :)

Have not had those yet, but would ignore anyway. They have no reason to buy from me, unless they are local. I am not the best priced, I don't sell online.

Also, the 'hello Sales' would be a give away.

Unfortunately, people still fall for these scams. Seems they are getting better in expressing themselves as well...
