I got the e-mail from Don Lambert a couple of weeks ago.

Does anyone know what happens to all of these thousands of shinny gold frames, honey oak frames, mahogany frames, acrylic, glass, etc?

What do these do with all of this stuff when they get it?

They probably get shipped back to USA and sold through big box craft stores. (I'm just kidding)

    On a similar theme.....

If anyone has a PayPal account and get an e-mail saying your account has been suspended due the suspicious activity or whatever and could you please follow the above link to reset your details- DELETE them asap. They look very authentic and the fact they they claim to be trying to protect you from the very people who send them can throw people off their guard. I've had them every month or two for years and my PP account is still working fine.

Good advice. Never follow a login link from an email. They're often faked just to get you to give up your login credentials, to a fake site. (phishing) If in doubt, go directly to the website yourself and log in. Then if something important is real, the site will give you a pop up.

Whenever that happens, make sure to notify paypal

I used to get these once a week, now it has almost stopped.

    Another day another scam spam:

    Helllo,

My name is Mohammed and my resume is attached.

    is it o.k.?

Same email, three different names with a zip file full of pain attached to each one.

    Thank you Mr Kaspersky.

Does anyone have a filter they've put together for Outlook that will intercept/delete ANY/ALL emails that have a zip file attached?
    or
A cpanel global email filter that will do the same that can be installed at the account level instead of by the host@host level?

Not exactly but I use a product I think is just as good: Mail Washer Pro.

    http://www.firetrust.com/products/mailwasher-pro

As it says: "Never download unwanted email to your inbox, keeping you safe from spam and viruses"

You can use it from any computer regardless of if its the PC that your email client is on. Here is a review of it: http://spam-filter-review.toptenreviews.com/mailwasher-pro-review.html

TNX Larry, I will take a look.

Besides the zip files via our 3 email server(s)/14 accounts, we have multiple gmail and several MSFT cloud accounts. Seems as though Gmail and MSFT could/would take a proactive approach and catch the bad carp, they must make more money by allowing the carp to go through.

I think GMail has that option on their webmail page. Under their settings there are a ton of options. Surely one has to do with spam.

  13. Mike Labbe

Zip files are fine, just dont open them if you dont trust the sender. Most a/v programs will scan inside zip file attachments, anyways.

  14. Rick Bergeron - CPF

Rick Bergeron - CPF SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

True, but since 99.99% of the emails coming to us with zip attachments are nefarious, I would just rather have them auto-deleted by a script instead of having to manually delete dozens of them per day.

They are getting really good at spoofing things to look like a legitimate sender which is what got me a while back. I was expecting an attachment from David@wellsfargo when the darN thing arrived that appeared to be from David@wellsfargo.

I haven't found anyone's email filter system that allows filtering on attachment types. I was hoping that someone had found a regex filterstring that might trap them.

  15. Mike Labbe

Mike Labbe Member, Former moderator team volunteer

av should auto remove the bad ones before they get to the inbox.

I have Kaspersky Internet Security which (touch wood) has sniffed out all the nasties so far including the ones I mentioned above.

It usually sounds a warning then flashes a screen announcing that the dangerous item has been "disinfected" This is usually followed by another stating that disinfection has failed and the item has been deleted.

Kaspersky will also flash a warning if I am silly enough to click a suspect link in an email and if I insist on visiting that site I have to deliberately override the blockage.

The Scammers/Spammers are getting more creative. Nearly 100 today. The new twist (at least for me) is that the Junk emails have been tagged with 'read receipt requested' making it a longer process to tag as junk. And then, don't forget that the default for the read receipt request is "Yes" instead of "No". You don't want to return a read receipt to prove the email address was a good one.

  18. David Waldmann

David Waldmann SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

    That IS nasty.

But if you have it, you might try using your webmail access - that may ignore requests for read receipts. At least, I don't remember ever getting one using mine.

The other possibility (if you can tell it's spam without opening it) is to use a view that does not open the message. Then you can just delete from the header and the read receipt will not be presented.

You're from far enough back that you probably know this, but you can type "N" rather than clicking the button or arrowing over and then pressing Enter. This eliminates the possibility of the wrong button being pressed, but of course it doesn't prevent you from automatically pressing Enter before you realize what the question is.

Did you take a look at MailWasher? Handles these easily. Mark as Spam and delete from the server without ever having to worry about the read receipt. MailWasher just ignores it.

  20. Rick Bergeron - CPF

Rick Bergeron - CPF SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Yes I did. I am at the "Poop or get off the Pot" fork in the road. 30 day test period just expired with mixed results of about 55% reduction so that is a major improvement worthy of the expense. Still haven't found a script to detect and mark any email containing a zip file as spam. Those seem to be the ones that make it through all the detection filters.

Thank you. I might not have tried it if you had not recommended it.

My Anti Virus finds most of those. I use Avast Free here at the shop. Don't remember what I use at home. I only have Thunderbird installed at home so my antivirus needs here at the shop are minimal.

Another advantage of Mail Washer is that I can read my emails here at the shop without Thunderbird. I do have Squirrel Mail installed on my server but I prefer Mail Washer. I only use Squirrel Mail at the shop if I want to reply to an email.

  22. Rick Bergeron - CPF

Rick Bergeron - CPF SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Didn't realize MailWasher costs 25% more to purchase if you use the majority of the trial period. We are trying to move everything to Outlook client. Outlook.com keeps trying to get in the way.
