When I visit our credit union account online, our system pops up a suggestion to always use BitDefender Safe Pay for online transactions. I don't pay bills from it, only check balances and occasionally do a transfer between their in-house accounts. Is this something you use?

I use one provided by my bank, can't remember the name now :( but I will post it when I next look, you can set it to protect other sites too.

At least the bitdefender website has an A+ rating for their own security certificate.

There are many banks, credit unions and other financial institutions that have less than stellar ratings for their own website security certificate. One local bank had an F rating because the website was vulnerable to a miriad of potential exploits and only commented that the FDIC rules do not require anything special; though the same bank required any merchant account to have A rating or higher and be fully PCI compliant and stated the PCI compliance rules did not apply to banks; thus the reason for their own security to be low. I have changed banking institutions for having only having a B rating for their own website SSL certificate.

I don't know the security certificate rating for our bank, but they sure are security conscious. In addition to hosting a bi-annual security conference for their customers, their online security is strong to the point of being a pain. For instance, you need three things to log on. Username, password and security token*. In addition, if you do any ACH transfers you must email them or the batch will get deleted.

*A device the generates a one time password as a 2FA. Our bank offers both standalone key generators as well as one that works as an app on your smart phone.

I wish banks around here would practice that. Do you mean that you must email the bank regarding daily merchant account batches?

2FA devices: Yep, have 4 Yubikeys here. Smartphone apps have been shown to be susceptible to "man in the middle" issues snooping and I expect them to be phased out before they gain a larger stonghold in the online security world.

enter your bank's domain name. A very thorough test will done on all the parameters of the security certificate. The SSL labs test is one of the first tests utilized in a PCI scan, but according to the bank and our broker.... banks, credit unions, brokerage firms, etc websites are not required to be PCI compliant because they are regulated by the government instead of a private entity controlled by the credit card companies.

Also a visit to the bank's website should have a green padlock, not a browser warning "this site is NOT secure". That is a certain indication that those responsible for the bank website are not competent, don't care or don't know.

I use Bitdefender and am totally happy with it. In PC reviews it is rated at the top of the list if not #1. I've had Norton, AVG, McAfee, & Kaspersky and have found that I can rely on Bitfender to do all, the others not so much. I am in no way a computer wiz so I suggest you look at the PC reviews to see how the industry likes Bitdefender also look at the reviews from private individuals and I think that you will be impressed. just my opinion Joe

No, that is just for ACH batches initiated by us, whether debits or credits to our accounts.

Mine works even when the phone not connected to anything, just like the standalone device. Maybe I just don't understand how it can be snooped. They do offer a standalone, I just prefer not to carry one more piece of hardware around.

    Overall an "A" rating.

    Certificate - 100%

    Protocol Support - 95%

    Key Exchange - 90%

    Cipher Strength - 90%

We use Bitdefender already; it's just that I don't use the SafePay. The box for it hops up every time I go to my accounts, and even though I keep hitting the 'x', to clear it, it keeps coming back. Maybe it's a tribble. Good conversation, and feel free to keep it up.

Wait, so you like Star Trek but not James Bond?

Tribbles might be the only full Star Trek episode I've seen.
