From their website a couple of months back I had marked down that the Decor show was on Sept. 11 to 13. Now their website says Sept. 25 to 27

Did anyone else know about this change? Glad I didn't book the flight yet, but I'm wondering if I book a flight this week, what happens if the date changes again, or like last year gets canceled all over again...

I got an email from them about the event with the dates on it and noticed the difference...but it didn't highlight the difference.
Sep 11-13 was the prior dates...but I know more than a coupla framer that have NOT gotten the email from DECOR stating the date of the event.

Yep. A salesrep told me it had changed, so I went online and checked. Even though they are new owners, I hate that they have again not scheduled it at the same time as the gift show in the America's Mart. :( I try to kill 2 birds with one stone...

    Atlanta as a destination....

My communications with the new owners following their email blast last week with new dates, was that they hoped to convince the Mart to move their dates back.... (I can't see that happening) and I'm not sure why Decor would do this.

I would think that the Gift Market is much more firmly entrenched into their dates for buyers, hotel bookings, etc.

I agree that having the shows on top of each other is a bigger draw!

One of the main reasons we go is to catch the gift mart and the frame show in one trip...we have 50% of our business gifts and decor, so we'll probably cancel the Decor trip and hit the other gift and decor shows then do Vegas for the framing.

Don't bet against the Mart shifting to the new date.

the reason EXPO was shifted was Roch Hashanah is night fall on the 8th through nightfall on the 10th.

Believe what you want about there being more Christians in this country....... but I can guarantee that there would be NO ONE setting up ANYTHINGK on the 10th.... nothingk.

    Especially the Mart.

    Markets for gift buying...

    Dick & Allora,

With a 50% gift mix to your business, have you typically shopped the Fall market at America's Mart or don't you also visit one of the big January markets? Atlanta, New Yow, Chicago or Dallas? or do you often do both September and January for gifts?

I ask this knowing that it typically takes two market trips a year in the gift industry to catch the new products.

    John

  13. JWB9999999

    JWB9999999 SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

50% of my floor space (not sales) is home decor, furniture and gifts. I typically hit 5 trade shows each year, including the September one in Atlanta... when it's combined with the framing one. I do not visit the other "big" shows in Atlanta, Dallas, etc. They wouldn't pay for themselves.

  14. couture's gallery

couture's gallery PFG, Picture Framing God

Yes...we hit several...as a matter of fact Allora is enroute as we speak to High Point right now...we also have furnishing acccessories ( lamps, etc etc ) as well as small unique furniture items.

  15. Pat Kotnour

Pat Kotnour SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Baer is correct about the reason the date was changed. There are just too many vendors and shops that would not be able to participate. Just think of it as trying to have a trade show during Easter week. The show would die before it got off the ground. They had no choice but to change the date. Personally, I like the later date better....kids are back in school, people have had a chance to take a breath after Labor Day and get back into a routine, and business can be a bit slow that time of year so it is easier to get away.

From what I understand there are several hotels within a short walk from the Mart. Which means.....NO CABS! Yeah! I haven't checked into the available hotels around the area yet, but will be doing so soon.

Is it true there nothing similar to the Bellagio in all of Atlanta???

  20. JWB9999999

    JWB9999999 SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

There is a hotel basically across the street from the mart, and many all around downtown Atlanta. Traffic isn't bad downtown, though you'll have to pay to park. But if you are willing to walk a little, there must be 20 hotels within a mile of the mart.

  21. couture's gallery

The Motel 8 is about 3 blocks away and nice and clean, cheaper than most. We stay there ever year and walk to the show

    MaJa SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Ummm ... yea ... no fountains, tho!

There is the hotel with the spinning restaurant at the top ... based on the price of the food I'd say it's a pretty swanky hotel.

There is also a Hilton or Hyatt ... maybe both.

I'm sure when it gets closer there will be "event" hotels, but I usually hunt for something cheaper ... and/or closer.

September will be here before we know it!!

I already have a contract and a booth assignment, if that gives you any peace of mind. From what I understand there are many others that do as well. Since Sept is six months away, within the next 2 or 3 months everyone should have a pretty good idea of the shows future, and waiting a couple of months to book a flight shouldn't change the cost much...if at all.

I am really hoping that other vendors make a commitment like I did and don't wait until Decor can't go forward. No one should expect them to be able to put on a good show if they don't know who is going to partisipate. It doesn't work that way.

  26. cjmst3k

    cjmst3k SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Out of curiousity, did you have a contract and booth assignment from the 2009 one too?

  27. Pat Kotnour

Pat Kotnour SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

No, they canceled it before we made payment. What I want to say to any vendors out there......if you are going to wait and see, the show won't happen. The show can't go on unless people like us are willing to step up to the plate and make it happen. No one should expect Decor to book anything without our commitment. Frame shops need to start calling the vendors to let them know that you want the show. They all need to be told that it will be attended and if they have it you will come.

  28. cjmst3k

    cjmst3k SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

...still wondering when I should book my flight, as not to have the show canceled out from under us...

  29. MaJa

I just checked the website ... I think it's been updated since I was there last ... there is even a "Baer" video!

Anyway, it says classes will be posted early June.

It's a tough call ... I'm lucky I will be driving from FL.

I think the airfare is best booked about 2 months out, maybe wait until July ... unless you can find a good deal.

Also, you may want to check with the airlines. I know Southwest will let you cancel and use the amout you paid toward your next trip. Too bad Southwest does not fly into Atlanta.

I would like to know the same thing.....and I have a contract and have already paid a deposit on a booth. Now my question is; has anyone else reserved a booth for this show yet?

    Newbie Question

My wife & I are new to this business and hope to attend Atlanta in Sept. or Las Vegas (in January??) for the first time...it will likely be one, but not both. Is there a registration fee to attend either event? What costs are associated with them? We have no idea what to expect or what to plan for.

  32. JWB9999999

    JWB9999999 SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Vegas is probably the better bet for you. I'm guessing flights to Vegas will be much cheaper for you than to Atlanta. Vegas is also a larger forum than Atlanta has been lately.

That said, I've never been to Vegas, and I always go to Atlanta. Atlanta suits me fine, has an additional gift market there that I also shop at, and it is driving distance for me. :)

As for costs, I believe registration at both is free. If you sign up for classes, some are free and some are not. If you are new as you said, I would sign up for every class that you could that interests you. There is a LOT of good info out there, and some of the best in the industry will be your instructors. You won't regret spending the money.

There aren't any other costs that I can think of that are directly for the event itself. Of course you will have your hotel and food, and any entertainment. You may have some taxi expenses, depending on which hotel you stay in, whether there is an airport shuttle, and where you choose to roam. And you may decide to make purchases of supplies, books on framing, moulding, artwork, machinery, and so forth, which will all be on display for you from various vendors in our industry.

Thanks - I've not checked flights yet. I assumed that Vegas was the larger event, but bigger isn't necessarily always better, IMO. I'll keep checking the Decor-Expo web and their schedule to see what develops there. (I think I'd rather fly in the fall than in the winter).

Here is the Vegas show website ... http://s19.a2zinc.net/clients/ezhobbypub/wcaf10/public/MainHall.aspx

    It is Jan 24th - 26th.

They also have a VIP Pass, you'd have to call or email them, I can't find a link. It covers hotel, all the class you want, and gives you meal tickets. You can start paying on it now and by the time the show rolls around all you'll need is air fair.

I have been to both shows. Our very first was Atlanta. It was not very crowded, which was nice. You could spend more time with the instructors and venders. Plus it wasn't overwhelming.

Watch for meet-up info for which ever show you pick!! The Grumblers will get together and there you will find a wealth of information and friendship!!

Hope to see you there ...

We like Atlanta better than Vegas...mostly because we can drive there in 8 hours and we have the gift mkt which we attend often.....Vegas is bigger andn we went once..it was ok....we just don't like Vegas itself.

I've been to both Atlanta and Vegas. Vegas has grown from very small (The first year I think I only needed an afternoon there) to a large and well attended show of suppliers and classes that you can spend days at.
My money goes to Vegas. (And since I really don't gamble there was no pun intended!)

I’m trying to figure Atlanta travelling from overseas and in addition my wife is due at a conference (non framing) in New Orleans on the 28th and 29th.

I’m trying to figure out if I can go and we could make a bit of a holiday out of the whole trip, though with the way the Euro is going to the $ it could put a spanner in the works.

I don't drink or gamble, but I still love it! The show and Vegas.

The hubby is not much of a city person, so Atlanta or Vegas are not big on his list of places to visit.

Honestly, I feel the same. I went to Vegas once, and I plan to go back one more time to see the half that I missed the first time. But I didn't like the city. It took me 3 days just to overcome the revulsion I was feeling after arriving and seeing what I saw there every day.

That said, I love the shows there. :)

  44. rodmurrow

    rodmurrow CGF, Certified Grumble Framer

I've never been to Vegas, have no interest in gambling at all, but would like to see the "lights and sights" and enjoy some nice dinners. Beyond that, the main attraction for me would be the conference.

  45. MaJa

    MaJa SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

That's why we go ... we always catch one show (usually the night we leave) and do at least one nice dinner, but usually more then one.

It's all about the convention for us. Last time we stayed at the Hilton and that made it easy. It's not the nicest hotel, but since the convention is right there in the hotel it is the closest.

  46. Paul N

If I had to choose, definitely Vegas.

Much more interesting city, great hotels, excellent shows(*) and restaurants, easy to get around by rail or taxi, many Grumblers elect to go to one show only and it's almost always Vegas, bigger show, more classes, most vendors, etc.

And before Rob Markoff and Baer have a fit: The Chinese dinner and the Limo ride too....:p

Cost-wise: One could easily find airfare+4 nights in a very good hotel for less than $500.

And of course, what happens in Vegas.....is on Youtube.

(*) We went to Phantom of the Opera at the Venetian and it beat Broadway's version by a New York mile!!
