I used to buy oversize easelbacks from S&W, but they don't show up in United. Does anyone know where I can find high quality easelbacks up to 20x24?

Le, put that photo on an Easel!

I'm still looking for those easelbacks, and now I'm running out of the doorback easelbacks I bought from L-J, and the garbage they sell now is not what I want. Does anyone have an answer?

For me, the best easle back in the business is One made by Albin Products. It's called the Easle-Mate, and it can be used on both wood and metal frames. Both M&M and United carry them.

Le,
Tell me how many good easel backs do you need
and what is it a good easel back to you? I am a manufacturer of high end photo frames and I produce my own hand made and hand wrapped easel backs. Those items with ribbon limited extending leg, the kind that you cannot simply buy with United or S&W (I am afraid the last one went out of business for a couple of years now)but need to order. Suppliers are providing commercial quality easel backs only.
If you need just a few good easel backs, now and then, it's not worth to order but to produce them yourself. As a framer you certainly have that ability and let your clients pay the right price.
Shall you need more details on how to, feel free to contact me by E-mail.

Frame Harbor, It sounds like a business op for you. Making easel backs of a fine quality for the trade. Plus you have over 1000 potential customers right here on the Grumble. What do you think?

Curly,
I was once thinking of it but the prospective didn't look very promising to me at that time. And becoming a supplier for United did not excite me either. Let's wait a bit. I have a feeling that we'll hear soon from a couple of Korean producers of ...yes, easel backs. Namely Sug Chea Puk and Nam Su Tien.
On a serious note, maybe I'll start a thread in the idea of measuring the intensity of such a need for good easel backs among the 1000 framers strong potential market. Thank you for your thoughts.

No, but believe me, making such easels is not big deal and, acustom made easel back stands apart and deserves to be paid to get it. You just assume that clients are always so cheap as to go for up to ten dollars photo frames and under 1 dollar easels when it comes to framing their most treasured memories.

I for one would love to buy top quality easels or learn to make my own, we sell photoframes and if we could make good backs we would use up alot of excess footage.

Hand wrapping an easel back is easy, it is time consuming though. We charge $65.00 to make one from scratch. We sell one every now and then. I found to make one from scratch, by the time the dust settles it takes about an hour. I would love to find a source for quality made ones. All we have is the commercial junk, I don't even like to show them.

For directions to make fabric wrapped easel backs, look in "More Answers for the Framer," by Paul Frederick. Directions are in the beige book and on page 133. They turn out nice but are time consuming.
