Ever Use DuckDuckGo?

Hubby's wanting to switch to a less evil search engine, and an artist just told me about this one. She said it's the only one she knows of that doesn't track user's behavior. I'm sure there probably more on some darknet-y, encrypted part of the web, but only Mike, Vic and Darren would know about that. If you do use DuckDuckGo, how has it worked? We don't care so much about how we come up in others' searches, just wanting one for our own. And if you're just itching to tell about a special one that only those with secret agent rings know of, feel free to share. (Which, I suppose is about like telling folks how to find your favorite fishing hole.)

Use it a lot. No tracking, fast, and at the end of its use, hit the flame logo in the upper right corner to end the session.

I only heard of it recently but just Googled it (!) and read their story. Just one question; if they are not selling info, tracking or selling positioning how are they paying their bills?

Anyway, I have downloaded it onto my Chrome browser and it straight away hijacked the address bar - not cool - so I restored that to the original settings. I believe it has a reverse image search facility too but could not find out how that works yet. More experimentation required before I can say it is better or worse than Google.

Tracking really does not worry me that much - if anyone finds my life exiting enough to probe into they really need to get out more.

There's a choice issue. If you're fed up with seeing ads for Instant Pots on a news site because you did an Instant Pot search three minutes ago on Amazon, use the Duck. But if you want to attract ads, use Chrome. You may have a reason for being tracked. I just dislike Google and its silent policies.

Quora usually has some good perspectives: https://www.quora.com/Why-should-I-use-DuckDuckGo-instead-of-Google

First and foremost objection to google: the founders were spoiled brats from the leland stanfurd JUNIOR university. Yuk.
Second objection: google's initial success was parallel to Gallup's. Gallup surpassed other polling outfits by putting its faith in statistics. Hands-off approach to ranking search results by citation frequency launched google past Alta Vista and Netscape. With success came hubris, and google has abandoned blind sampling for arbitrary judgment.
Third objection: google greed knows no bounds when it comes to sucking up computer resources. Caching files might speed searches and web app performance, but this delays deployment of changes in software. Moreover, google exacerbates the hardware/software feedback loop, which accelerates obsolescence.
Fourth objection: we got rid of party-line telephones generations ago.
Thanks for the suggestions - time to try duck duck go.

I recently changed from Chrome to Brave as a browser to get away from Googles dominance of the internet. DuckDuckGo is the default search engine for them.

We use it - haven't had any problems. They gave us free t-shirts in the beginning.

Well, I know this probably won't be of interest to most, I actually use bing, not because it works better or anything like that but because everytime I use it I build up points which I convert into xbox vouchers and get mo y off games and stuff :).

A few years back I read somewhere or other a recommendation for Duck Duck Go, so I thought I would try it. It was appealing that it didn't track your searching, but I wanted to see what kind of search results it produced.

So I searched for a couple things that I was familiar with, one of which, of course, was picture framing in my area. There aren't too many frame shops here, but it missed several of them, which would mean a majority of them (including me). I wanted to see if I could trust their results if I was searching for something else I needed that I didn't know about. Let's say I want to get fencing for my yard, it seems I couldn't trust that DDG would give me all the places in my area that do fencing so that I could check out their websites to see which one I liked. It's good not to track, but if you aren't giving good search results then what does it matter.

Now this was a couple years ago, so maybe they've gotten better. I might give them another look see.
