Grahame, is that you in the picture playing the pipe. Do you play bagpipes also?
Hi Anne,

i'm trying to learn, very difficult instrument to play, and expensive to own, luckily a practice chanter like the one i'm using only sets me back around $120 ish..

strange that that was the last capture of the day for the webcam, must have been having a quick practice as the computer was shutting down.

Oh, by the way would you mind a fan from overseas? I just checked out your page and like what you are doing with it.
feel free to fan us, our ethos for the page is to make it asfriendly as if you were walking into the store. It is all a bit trial and error to be honest with you, never really considered using facebook as a conduit to seek out customers.

So, now I am only six away from the magic 100 - does the URL change automatically, do I have to apply for it or what? And I hope I do not have to prove who I am by giving them a mobile number.....

Somebody who did it this way please tell me what happens next????? I can't stand it!

I know you have said this many tomes, but nowhere did I see that you had to give mobile number. I did not do it nor have the 6 people that I set up do it either. Go to www.facebook.com/username and do your url.

Ths is the message I see on that link.....

Before you can set your username, you need to verify your account.
If you have a mobile phone that can receive SMS message, you can verify via mobile phone. If not, please try to register your username at a later time.

Well now I have 103 fans and still with the long URL.....
Where's the magic?
You have to change it yourself. Go to www.facebook.com/username

Do you have a url for your personal page? I think you have a personal url first.
If you have one for your personal page, under that it will give you an option to get a url for your business page.

Framar

I think I am SOL on this abbreviated URL thing - I am still only getting the pages with the mobile phone info to ID me.

Maybe because I am in Canada and my shop address is in the US?

Here is a question - does Facebook itself have a "homepage" where they update what the heck is going on there on a daily (or preferably) hourly basis?

I have tried Facebook.com and it takes me to a sign in/sign up page only - I have never found anything even remotely informational that has appeared to come from Facebook itself.

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
OK - here is a question for all of you who tell me to click on that
http://www.facebook.com/username link - what do you (in the States) see on whatever page comes up?

The only page it ever leads me to is the one asking for my mobile phone number.

Mike? Where is Mike? Maybe I'll have to take this inquiry down to the Tech forum when I get back home this evening.....

How did you set your FB up? Did you do it as your business name or your personal name?

I set mine up first as a personal page under william harris, and then set up a business page for ocean art. I had to get a username for william harris first, www.facebook.com/surferbill18 and then set up the business page url which is
www.facebook.com/oceanart1

This is what I see on my FB username page.

Your username has been set

You would set a user name for your Page. If that doesn't work then maybe go buy a $20 pay as you go cell phone, I got rid of my home land line a few years back. You can also have your home number transferred to your new cell phone.

Thanks everyone

Thanks everyone, I now know why I have been receiving requests for being a fan of different Facebook locations.

My plan was to get a website and start a web presence next year, but with everyone's help, I'm starting earlier.
I have now added a business page to my face book. Hopefully it works.

Once I get 25 fans, I can get the url with only grey owl framing.

I know my site needs work, but I thought I would get it up, and then add the photo's etc. If you see any major problems please let me know.

thanks

Thanks for those links, Randy - however it does keep saying carp about Mobile Phone verification - aren't those cheap mobile phones the ones the criminals use so they can't be traced? Wouldn't a land line I have had since 1977 be a better indication that I am who I say I am?

I hate facebook, I hate phones, and while we are at it - I hate banks.

I just googled "Facebook lite" and went to a trial version of my own personal profile as FB lite. After looking at it there was a feedback option (!) and after I told them how great FB lite was looking I asked them about the mobile thing.

Who knows - maybe there is a human being in there somewheres who can at least point me in the direction to find my answer.

Unlike the lady at my bank today who told me to call the Customer Service number (after I had already spent a good half hour working my way thru their dang phone menu)and press "0#" three times and that would get me to a human who could solve my problem (can't change a PIN unless you have a PIN and if you don't remember your PIN you need to enter it to find out what it is) anyhow I pressed 0# and got "invalid entry" each time I pressed it and I pressed it several dozen times with no result.

So get this - now I have to go into the branch and they will send off a request and the bank will mail me a new PIN so I can change it into the PIN I want!!!!!

Thanks dear Mar!!

But it seems it wants to change my name to the business name....FB can be very cryptic and chaotic.

Here on the Grumble (and any website for that matter) one can do without Facebook's help in getting a unique FB url....by using whatever name and using a link hidden behind it.

Here's example (and I didn't get my unique FB link yet, by the way): www.Facebook.com/Frame & Art Gallery II

Well, since I have no intention of obtaining a stupid cell phone I will never receive that text message from those idjits to confirm my identity so I remain with my ungainly address for the shop's page, which I must admit I have been ignoring lately.

The abbreviated FB business page link would be useful, though, for any printed material, such as business cards and brochures.

Growing on Facebook....

...I'm starting to get the hang of facebook, but I'm still not up to speed on twitter.
Bill,

I would say that you clearly have a handle on Facebook. I was impressed that I'd just hit the 200 Fan level yesterday, and then I see that you are well over 700!

I realize that you wrote earlier about personal writing that helps break down the mystery of custom framing - in other words, you've become very human to potential customers which I think is important, but that in itself did not cause you to grow to 700+ fans.

Do you request Fans to ask friends, or does Facebook do this automatically? Is it both? Have you done any paid FB advertising for Fans?

surferbill said:
... One local restaurant I'm a fan of has 1,600 fans. Free advertising to 1,600 people each week would be a powerful way to keep your name out there.
Indeed - The 3/50 Project now has 51,000 Fans! I'm sure some businesses have even more. I agree that this is worth working a bit to compliment your paid advertising programs (NOT replace them.)

Thanks for sharing.

Hey John,

When I first started a few months ago I had about 30 fans, and could not imagine how I would ever get past 100 or so fans.
I bought a 25 dollar download PDF file from allfacebook.com titled "3000 fans in 30 days".
http://www.allfacebook.com/2009/04/3000-facebook-fans-30-days/

It's a how to manual on ways to get fans to sign up to your facebook page.
One of the ways is to b-mail your friends and ask them to "suggest fans" to your page. I asked one friend that had hundreds of friends, and she was responsible for over a hundred fans signing up to my page.

Also, I have a little "become a fan of Ocean Art" display in my shop. I have several hundred prints left over from a local artist that I give away free if they sign up for my FB page.
Once people start signing up, it has a viral effect and more and more people start signing up.

Also, I had a graphic designer custom do my profile of Ocean Art, and add landing tabs and a special offer tab.
I haven't done the paid ads for FB or the paid apps on FB, but I'm thinking about it.
Good luck.
Bill

Okay, followed instructions just like you all said by going to facebook.com/username - I got the same screen as others asking for the mobile phone number. Did not put in anything, but clicked continue hoping it would take me to another screen and avoid the SMS page - now it has created a new page for me with my personal name...just like I'm a new user! Now, when I login to my business page with my normal login, I get the new page with the blank head and my name! I can access my business page from my personal page because I am a fan and everything is still there it appears. But does anyone know how to get rid of that other page and get me back to my business page when I log in? Very frustrating!!!

I finally did it..... joined Facebook, set up my page, recruited the first 25 fans and claimed my page name.....http://www.facebook.com/TEKniques
Now what??
I know, have to start posting items and letting things show on my news, but what?????
Should I post a reward for the first person to come (physically)visit so I have something interesting to put on there?????

P.S. for those with the SMS message, I got it a few times and then it just disappeared and gave me the right page once I had friends on my personal page and a few fans on the business page. So just keep trying ....

SMS = Short Message Service (according to wikipedia) lSo it would be a text message sent to your phone. I asked my sister if she could confirm me and she said no because they would then send her all kinds of messages and run up her bill.

Did you set up a personal page first or just a business one?

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
I set up a personal profile in July and then my business page a bit later. Have almost 300 friends and well over 100 fans. Have pretty much given up on the shop page.

Seem to be doing better snagging a new customer or two by lurking and schmoozing on the personal page.

Still wondering because I'm not signed up to FaceBook. I click on my link that you pasted above and I go to the Facebook Sign-In Page. When I clicked on your link it takes me directly to your business page!

I can also navigate your links?

John
John, I've never even looked at Facebook etc before, let alone having an account.

Just clicked the link Kirstie posted, and it took me straight to your FB page.

Copy that and you should be able to get anyone to your page.

Cheers,
Les

Indeed Les, but if you look back you'll see that this thread started in September 2009 - since then, many of us have gotten a better grip on this social networking giant. Paul N hits it on the head in that sometimes it can be simple as pie and other times FB is a real monster! :icon45:

Recently I've had some success in playing around with PPC ads on Facebook after reading an ezine article on them rivaling Googles Adwords due to size and targeting.....and I think there's a fair amount of truth there.

For those that are ready, please take a look at the recent AMX - Open for Business article on Five Essential Apps for Your Business's Facebook Fan Page.

Number One appears to be what Bill's Graphic House used to create his wonderful tabs at Ocean Art. Loved the "Fan Appreciation" tab and now I see you have a "Vote for Us" tab in place!

Bill,

Actually not true - it takes a Graphic Designer who is familiar with html code AND Facebook Apps to really make the difference! I think you found one.

I was able to "play" with the FBML and added the Gift Item of the Month and Sign Up for Our Newsletter boxes. :)
