Framing Myths

Your tool is always in the last place you looked. (for Mar!!)

Customer: "I can get this framed at Michael's for 60% off!... surely you can match that price!"

Framer: "I'd be happy to raise my prices for you!".

"Acid free" mats are preservation quality!

Sticky Velcro is great for mounting jerseys.

Art on paper should be mounted to the back of the mat with masking tape or packaging tape, right around the paper!

(These are a small selection from a "Myths" class I taught last year!)

Even though the frame was presented to me for scrutiny before it was carefully wrapped in front of me and that great big scratch that you just couldn't miss wasn't there then, it was there when I got it home and unwrapped it so it must be the shop's fault and they must replace it FOC.

The big tear in the wrapping, right above the scratch has nothing to do with anything, so don't try that old one either!

(This was today and it can't be a myth really because we swallowed it).

Foam shaving cream and hot water. Put the shaving cream on it and then use a paper towel soaked with hot water to remove sharpie from skin.

Shaving cream?? What mean shaving cream?? (Says the man with the furry face.)

I think vodka will too. Grey Goose or Belvedere undiluted, chilled and shaken, not stirred, works best.

Time to go home now and test it out!

:icon21:

Framers provide free lifetime maintenance on what they produce, no matter what the customers display - storage - environmental - fires, etc conditions are.

"Can you replace the dust cover for me?............. I had it framed by your shop about 30 years ago! "

Just because it says acid free it qualifies gummed tape to be archival

Just because it says acid free it qualifies mat board to be archival

Just because it says acid free it qualifies the glue to be archival

Hinge mounting is archival...........(masking tape, duct tape, artist tape, black photo tape)

all myths...

From what I've read here, using edge strips is better for most
applications, but isn't hinging with rice starch and mulberry paper
still considered archival as well?

When sheets get hinged here, wheat starch paste and kozo/washi/mulberry whatever you want to call it* paper is what we almost always use.

I usually make edge strips the same way.

*But please don't call it 'rice', that's something entirely different and it's not made of rice anyway.

Is it used to wrap rice and that's why it is called rice paper? I mean butcher paper isn't made from butchers...

I didn't say rice paper, I said rice starch.

Michael's

Michael's is the best place to go for best pricing.

M's doubles their price to discount it 50%.

Framers don't do the framing themselves. They take the orders, answer the phone and shoot the breeze with customers all day. Then, when the sun goes down, they go to sleep and hordes of tiny invisible pixies creep out of their hiding places among the moulding racks and get to work. In the morning they go hide again leaving all the framing jobs done and ready for collection.

One of the advantages to ordering chop vs. length is that the chop is inspected for quality control before it is wrapped up and shipped to the customer.

Gold Leaf

I just found out that gold leaf might really be gold metal leaf on length moulding. You really have to double check with the manufacturer to find out what they're using now days.

"rice" paper

Asian papers made from Kozo, Gampi, or Mitzumata fibers can be called "rice" paper. True rice paper is something more like papyrus.

You've been diskwalified..this is a MYTH thread.

They are quite high on many things but framers that believe they double the prices to mark them down or that they are so much higher than a local shop might be without checking to be sure aren't exactly right and need to shop them. They can be competitive on some things that we, as the primary victim of their crummy biz practices, should be aware of. Know your pricing and know your competition.

For a 100% true myth then - M's offers real discounts/coupons.

Just cuz it's Jesus ....doesn't mean it needs a gold frame............... :faintthud:

Two things I've heard while quoting frame repair.

Oh Your wrong, that brown bevel was there when the frame was new.

I like the brown bevel, it goes with the print.

UV glass stops art from fading
Masterpiece UV Glass prevents art from fading
Masterpiece acrylic prevents art from fading

.
Myth it only slows the fading process
