Internet 2.0 - Social Networking Revisited

OK - I admit it - I was most reluctant to take the plunge into Facebook back in July - I swore my membership would only last 3 days and then I would back out gracefully.....

Now I have over 200 friends on my profile and over 100 fans on my shop's page and at least 2 solid repeat customers gained from mostly the personal profile rather than the shop page.

The personal profile has allowed me to post photos of a lot of my "friends" from 20-30 years ago, actually find out their names and get to know then now as I was never able to get to know them back then.

I am astounded at the people who have befriended me or the ones who have agreed to be my friend - folks I have never actually met but I know "of" them and they obviously know "of" me.

I have been busy for the last over 3 months weaving all of these strands together, along with my Buffalo-centric blog and it is working for me.

I almost think the business page is superfluous. As a "person" rather than as a "business entity" I have "joined" theatre groups, animal charities, historical and art society pages. I am getting my name out there in front of all of these people.

It is free and it is fun. And I might add that I have never once played any game or taken any quiz or participated in any of the third party apps.

How are all y'all doing with this stuff?

I've got about the same results. Reconnecting with friends from 20 years ago. One old friend I haven't talked to in 25 years lives in Bali, so it's global.

I'm slowly building up my fan base and looking for ways to market Ocean Art on FB.
One of the merchants in our shopping center has over 1400 friends and fans and she raves about the sales results she gets from FB.

Also, I don't play any games and hardly any quizzes. I spend about 15 minutes in the morning and at night on FB, so it's not a big time drain.

Just had an open house and over half of the people that came in were from facebook. And to top it off 75% off those who purchased something were from FB. Works well for me, also stay away from farmtown and mafia. I almost exclusivly work the business page, don't post many status' on personal page.

I'm proud to be among the 200 or so.

The more nasty political threads there are on the grumble the less I come back and the more I go to facebook. (there are more than a few of us at this point)

I have received interest in my shop but no solid results yet.
But it is a fast and free way to advertise AND reconnect.

To be a fan of my site please go to .... http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Fanwood-NJ/Classic-Framing-and-Gifts/220216135117?ref=ts
I've only recently started to try and promote it so i can get my own url, then I can plaster it everywhere.

I just became a fan. You have a good looking FB page. I'm still grappling with putting content up on my business page.
They changed the rule, and all you need now is 25 fans to get the vanity url.

Also, I agree that FB is more laid back than the G.
People seem to be on their best behavior on FB, and I hope it stays that way.

First bit of advice: STAY AWAY FROM THOSE GAMES!!!! Once you sign up for Mafia Wars and Farmtown and Youville, you cannot remove yourself. Your page will be plastered with messages and updates and requests from people in those games, and there doesn't seem to be anything you can do about it.

I printed up a couple of signs with my FB url asking my customers to become a fan of Ocean Art on FB, and I printed up 200 3x5's of the sign to hand out to customers.
Also, I've started asking customers if they are on FB, and it's surprising how many are.
I just bought a FB pdf for 20 bucks, that is called "3 thousand fans, in 30 days" and it looks like it has some great info in it.

I wish I could get that much-coveted abbreviated URL for my shop page but I be dipped if I am gonna buy a dang cell phone to do it.

Between my unfortunate generic shop name and my dinosaur ways when it comes to phones I am up that old proverbial stream without the necessary means of propulsion.

Oh yeah, right - they have 500 million users and their platform is becoming increasingly unstable and they are gonna answer an email from me. Right.

I have never even seen anything that hints at a contact address.

Why do you need a cell phone?

Can't you make one up and then edit it later. Do they really check?

Mar just get a $20 pay as you go phone from Target, that's what all the terrorist do or why not go totally cellular you can have your home number put on your new cell phone and your cell bill will most likely be cheaper than your home phone service. If you ever need a land line you have one at your shop. Just sayin.:icon11:

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
See - my home phone is in Canada and my shop phone is in the States and never the twain shall meet - Canada has the some of the highest cell phone costs in the industrialized world and a phone bought in the States for $20 would not even work in Canada.

Heck, even if I went for an expensive name brand phone and plan in the States I would have to pay extra to get it to work in Canada as well. And the same (only costlier still) if I bought the phone in Canada.

Very annoying.

I would think that my home phone number which I have had for nearly 40 years would be better to identify me with than a throw away Trac phone. Or my 27 tear old shop number. But, Noooooo.....

'Tis is mystery.

I have a suggestion, when we post for our shops, the more people who "like" it or comment on it, the more lifespan the item gets, the more viral it becomes, we can all support each other post and help a Grumbler out.

p.s. hit me up I have 3 new post/updates today ;)

Mar, I did not enter my mobile phone number when I applied for my unique facebook url. I don't recall that at all. I think they did an email check and that was it. It was a very simple process.

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
I think because I am accessing FB from a different country than the location of my shop - that is why different rules seem to be applying to my failed efforts - never found any trace of them asking for an email addy as an alternative to mobile number.......

:(

Right now FB is so screwed up it is absolutely unbelievable - I wish they would just stabilize the features they already have instead of adding new carp every week!

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
OK - Bill gave me the idea to send them my regular land line phone number - they responded immediately that all I would have to do to stop all the security inquiries would be to send them the CODE that they just texted to my mobile.

ARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

And the inquiry that I posted three weeks ago on their (non) helpful little inquiry page has gone unanswered still.

Does anyone see anywhere to actually contact Facebook?????

RParrish

PFG, Picture Framing God
No clue on how to get a answer? You would have better luck maybe posting a status update to your friends.

How about a friend with a cell phone? Use thiers and be done get your URL.... How does one live in Canada and have biz in the states? I find it fascinating...

Thanks, Bill!

I am an American citizen who had been a Permanent Resident of Canada for over 40 years - lots of us who live near the border are in similar status situations and many have dual citizenship (especially since the US started allowing US citizenship to be held if one became a Canadian citizen). I can even vote in the States now (for the Pres and Congress people only) by absentee ballot - so last year I voted in Michigan - which was my last US address - LOL!

Randy, I can't get the link you posted to work. I get "Page Not Found". And I have 92 fans, so well past the 25. Any other help you can give me. I already have the page set up, but it doesn't have my store name after the www.facebook.com like yours and the others. Thanks for your help!

I think you have to first get a vanity url for your main friends page, and then you can get a vanity url for your business page. Of course, I may be wrong.

I hate that the software is now trying to guilt you into contacting someone you have not contacted in a while - "Write on their Wall."

Apparently many folks are up in arms over this because a lot of them have friends who are deceased and just as I do not want to see anyone starting a Birthday thread for a deceased Grumbler, no one wants to be prompted to write on dear old Bob's wall if he has been dead for a year.

I'm not dead yet!

Facebook announced this week that they will now make pages for the deceased into a memorial page if the family requests it and only family members will be able to make an update to inform others and the page will not be able to be searched.

If the family does not want it it will delete the personal page.
