Internet 2.0 - Social Networking Revisited

Well can't believe with all of the shops that are Frame Shop, something or other, that no one had claimed it yet. But I just got the unique name for my page: www.Facebook.com/FrameShop
Congratulations!

So you sent them your mobile phone number and they texted you a code, right?

Never heard any response from FB over my inquiry.

Congrats, BTW!

OK, here comes the complete idiot question:

How do you "Like" something?

surferbill

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
Baer,
I'm hoping this isn't one of your trick questions. ;)

Below is a post I made on FB. Right underneath the post are several options you can click on. You can "comment", or just click "like".
The more times people "comment" or "like" a post or photo, the more viral it gets going out to more friends networks.

Sweet. Now go change your domain name to FacebookCustomFraming.com . ;)

Officially got my first order from my www.Facebook.com/FrameShop fan page. I posted a $5.00 discount coupon for becoming a fan just the other day and it was used for the first time today. At this point most of my fans are other Grumblers, but I am working on getting new and existing customers to become aware of and sign up.

Good job.
I've gotten a couple of framing jobs from my "become a fan of Ocean Art on FB and receive a free poster" promotion.
One guy picked up his free poster, and had it framed along with another print he found in the shop.
Not bad for free advertising.

Help Still Needed

I'm still hoping for help to get my store name to with the facebook url, but I haven't figured anything out yet. It won't come up if I type www.facebook.com/framingmemories. I can google facebook framing memories, and it comes right up. If anyone can help me, I'd sure appreciate it!

You have to register it with them, it doesn't happen automatically.

You have enough fans so it should be fairly easy.

Go to ... www.facebook.com/username

Make sure you are doing it for the store site. There should be a drop down menu where you will see the store. (as long as you are the administrator)

THANK YOU, BOB!! I finally got it! Messed up the first time and it did my personal FB page, so I had to add a 1 to the end of my store name; but that'll work.

This is impressive. I just looked at your web site again. What software are you using to blow up a 4 x 6 photo to 16 x 20. Are you scanning the photo?

I'm not sure which photo you are talking about.
It is possible to enlarge a 4x6 photo to a 16x20 in CS3 photo shop, but it's better to start with a jpeg or tiff file.

I ask because you say something on your site on the printing services page about the ability to enlarge from a 4 x 6 to a 16 x 20 and I was wondering if you used special software. How are most of your customers bringing this type of stuff in?

Well this thread has kind of become the question & answer place for Facebook, so I'll just ask my question here, instead of starting a new thread.

I'm perhaps using the wrong terminology but I started on Facebook with a personal page where you have friends. I now also have a business page/ www.facebook.com/frameshop

Here is the situation and question. When I make a comment/post on my personal page it shows up in the LIVE FEED/News Feed. When I comment/post on my business page it does not show up there. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to make the business page the primary? If so how?

I think that's the way it's designed to work. Your personal page posts will go out to your "friends" and your business page will only go out to your "fans" of the business page.
Anything you post on the business page will show up on your personal page, but it will not go out to your friends.
Now if someone "tags" or "comments" on the business page post, it will go out to their friends and become viral.

At least that's the way I understand it.

RParrish

PFG, Picture Framing God
I have noticed that sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Just keep posting it, maybe even delete and redo the post weekly. I have noticed that lately it has been going through.

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
FB has been really skwirrely lately - posts coming and going and since they changed the Live Feed/News Feed thing - OY!

I keep going back to that "username" page hoping for a different screen but it keeps telling me if I don't have a mobile number for them to send me a text confirmation of my ID, to try again later. How much later? Months? Years? Decades??? I have tried weekly now for what must be several months.....

Can you give a friends cell # or another grumblers for confirmation?

I did not have to go through that confirmation screen, did everybody or is it by your location?

Bob

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
The only reason I can come up with that I need confirmation is that my computer lives in Canada with me and my shop lives in Buffalo. Danged if I know! I have sent FB an email asking about this and also placed one of those open kwestions that no one has answered.

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
Arrrrr!

I added my shop FB page address to my list of websites on my profile (regular website, blog and now the long FB URL, and I thought that might make a difference: BUT NO - here is the message (when I try www.facebook.com/username ) in Pirate English:

"Afore ye can call yerself by dis, ya needs to verify yer ship
If ya have one o dem messanger birds that can bring back da messages, ya can Verify via yer electric conchshell. If ye can't, den ya be outta luck until ye learn some patience ya scurvy dog."

So - I decided to try to phone that FaceBook phone number today - 605-543-4800. Of course it will come as NO SURPRISE that after dialing that number I received the message that I would need an ACCESS CODE to call it.
I looked in my phone book and found that the page of access codes was limited to New York State and this phone number was an area code (different from an access code) in California. The phone book gave a vague indication that to find other out of state access codes one should dial information, aka 411.

I dialed 411 and after going thru several levels of menus and management, I was told to dial O for Operator. Who knew you could still do that???

I dialed O and after two levels of management was told to dial the Verizon Business office to get the access code.

I dialed the only number I could find that sounded like a business office, suffered through a 10 minute wait with awful music and annoying prerecorded messages, finally spoke to a human who I am sure was not in North America, told her my needs and she hung up on me without saying a thing and I was eventually connected to yet another machine which told me (wait for it) "If you would like to make a call please hang up and dial again or call your operator."

After the steam stopped coming out of my ears I decided to take a wild guess at California being serviced by AT&T and I used that access code plus the FB number and........

......A pleasant young man's voice came on the line saying "Hello you have reached Facebook, if you know your party's extension..." and then he mentioned that they do not offer phone support at this time to customers of FB.

Arrrggghhh!!!!!!!

The heck with them - I am gonna try the "Tiny URL" thing - anyone ever did that???

Framar

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
Tiny URL thing is stupid and gobbledygook. Not very good for using to publicize one's FB business site, since the URL it made for me did not include either FB or the name of my shop.

*sigh*

Well, I was unsuccessful in Publishing our facebook page today. Apparently you DO need to have a personal profile before you can create a business page. (WHY do they LET you go through all the work before letting you know this?) Also, my employee who did most of the work setting up the page, photo album, etc. gave it the title Frameworks Custom Framing, which is generic enough that other similar named shops in other cities show up on the search. I think I would have preferred Frameworks Cincinnati, since this is maybe closer to what locals might type in, and it is similar to our web address, frameworkscincinnati.com .
There is no way to change the name once you create a page, so it looks as though I'm going to have to start over with a personal profile, then a new business page. Fortunately, the photos are all formatted and saved on my computer, so it will be easy enough to recreate the photo album. I figure I'll just go in to the existing facebook page and copy each caption one by one, and paste them into a word processing doc, so I can recopy them and paste them back into the photos in the new album.
If anyone knows an easier or more expedient way to accomplish these changes, please let me know before I spend all this time.
I have to say, the Facebook user interface is pretty squirrely at times.
:icon9: Rick

RParrish

PFG, Picture Framing God
Rick the captions can be copied and pasted from one page to another. The photos I assume are on your computer and have to be uploaded to the page FB will not allow you to copy and post a picture. Yes with so many users it its squirrely. Once you start your personal page you should be able to create a biz page and choose the name you want but you are stuck with it once it's done.

surferbill

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
I would suggest starting slowly with the business page and then adding things to it, instead of trying to do it all at once.
That way you can publish it and view it as you go along and not waste a lot of time dong things wrong.
FB is a little confusing at first, but it gets easier as you work with it's quirks.

:icon9: Rick
Once you get used to it, you will learn to like it. I can house photos there on the fly, and then automatically send the post to Twitter and now LinkedIn. If I want to post the info to my blog as well, the photo is already stored on Facebook. This is much faster and easier than storing blog photos on my site. I can still link the photos back to my web site. And, I now have a Facebook feed right on my home page. I love the integration. It makes social networking much easier.

surferbill

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
Kirstie, You are ahead of all of us in the social networking integration game. IMO

Right now I've only got the FB feeds going to Twitter and to my Blackberry.
I'm hoping to get FB and my website tied to each other soon.
I've got a "become a fan" link on my website, but would like them to be more synchronized.

A social networking tech was telling me to think of all the social networking sites you belong to as a big circle, and you can enter at any point through your website, FB, Twitter, Linkedin, or a blog, and still be able to get to the other applications.

I'm not there yet.

Rick Granick

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
I like a lot of FB's capabilities. It's just that sometimes when you try to click a button to confirm a change you made or go somewhere else on the site it actually hangs up unless you press the browser's reload button. I suspect there is too much activity on FB for the site's bandwidth to handle.
 Rick

That's super easy, there should be a link on the upper left corner of your page that gives you the code. It's one of the first things I did, but my site is pretty young still and it's one of the few things I could do.

Does anyone know if Google searches FB business pages and Twitter?
Google does search blogs and many, like mine, are well optimized.

Well, I think I've got my facebook page published. The thing is, it doesn't seem to be found by a simple search on Frameworks Cincinnati, or if your just type "www.facebook.com/Frameworks-Cincinnati" into the browser's address window. One needs to type
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cincinnati-OH/Frameworks-Cincinnati/178203044212?ref=search&sid=100000107237629.1955707323..1

What's the deal with this? How can I fix it?
Also, If I do a search in the FB search box on Frameworks Custom Framing, I get two results of preliminary pages that were supposed to have been deleted.

I find the Facebook user interface very non-intuitive and frustrating.

Help!

Rick once your get 25 fans you can get your own URL for www.facebook.com/frameworks-Cincinnati just go to www.facebook.com/username. IF you friend me I can send Grumblers your way!

Dont worry I'll help you get there by the end of the day

You can be a fan of your own shop too.

RParrish

Rick if you have any email contact with your clients you make FB go through your email address book and check to see which ones are on FB, then you can "friend" them and share your shop page with them.
