A lady brought in a painting done by Joseph Solman.
It is signed "J S", not sure how he signed his art.

This is a watercolor on paper, a portrait of her daughter. Apparently she knew him personally.

It has been framed in a metal frame and very skinny mat :)vomit:). She came in for glass replacement and fixing frame. Size is 20 x 24

I quoted her a price for that.
She became interested in reframing the whole picture. We designed and I quoted her on that as well.

Both prices were too high...

Anyway, I am just wondering what a piece of art like this would go for. I would feel stronger if I could give her some idea of value on this and why it's worth to frame it appropriately. I did explain it to some extend but right now, she is only fixated on the price (it came to over $400 for the full frame job.

Anyone?

According to Artprice - it appears that auction prices for his w/c work is generally 1500.00 to 3000.00. There are a few examples there which are signed "JS". High auction appears to be 10000.00 for an oil in 2007. Retail, if the work is in demand, would likely be higher in either case. She should probably take care of it properly...

Well, I just called her.

No order, no nothing. She politely thanked me for the follow up and 'will tell all her friends about my store'.

Just hope she will think about it some more and change her mind.

My feeling is that she probably brought it to the glass place.

:faintthud:

OR ...she is so shocked at the appraisel of the art that she wrapped it up and put it away somewhere until she has the $$$ for glass and the new framing job.
