Hi there,
Is there a source for a wood display cases in 16 x 20" size in mahogany? The depth would be about 2 3/4-3" inches. It needs to open from the front, hinged with a latch.
Thanks!
Susan

Hi Susan:
If you can find the perfect product ready-made, go for it. But in the past I've custom-built several display cases, and they're pretty easy. All you need is two frames that add up to the proper depth, hinged together. In this case, a couple of 1-1/2" deep flat-cap frames built out of the same moulding might be just right.

Build the outer frame about 1/4" larger than the inner frame, so the piano hinge (aka continuous hinge) that holds them together can be hidden. On the opposite side, the closure can be a rare-earth magnet mating with a screw. Easy-peazy.

For hanging hardware, use security hangers or a pair of mending plates (referring to Paul Fredrick's method).

We've made quite a few along the lines of Jim's method. Lee Valley has all the hardware you need. If you do build your own, buy an assortment of piano hinge sizes. They'll all come in handy.

We built a large one with two doors to showcase small figurines, and hid the catches to prevent browsers from opening it. One catch on the top opens the right hand door, , and another under a shelf opens the left door.

I'm going to steal Jim's idea of building the top one slightly larger than the main case.

Thanks so much for the replies. I was inquiring for a retired framer who is not on the Grumble. He was looking to replicate a readymade shadow box that he used years ago. It looks like it is no longer available. Thanks for the ideas. I know that he is following this!
