MP II: How the Other Half Lives

Less

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
Episode 2:

Are you guys still waiting for your free copy, or have you nothing to say?

From the article:

Points to Ponder:

· Make your store beautiful and people will remember you.

· Give people something to do, and more specifically, something to buy, while waiting for framing services.

· Organization and attention to detail are paramount, no matter how large or small your operation.

· Hire good people, and empower them with a strong organizational model.

Additional recommendations:

· Install a larger sign.

· Buy box quantities

A secret to improving business: The 25% - 75% Rule – 25% new ideas and 75% having the discipline to do what you know what you should.

“Now if we only had someone breathing down our necks reminding us what to do”.

Hmmmm, I wonder who that could be?

Did I miss anything?

I don’t have much to say, accept I love cheese and my mouth waters every time I here stories about how great the ribs in Chicago are. I have been talking to my wife about going to Chicago for a weekend, just for the ribs. That and I have always loved the Blues Brothers. Maybe if I have time, I can squeeze in a visit to (what’s the place called, oh yeah) Artists’ Frame Service. Do you think Less would be welcome? I wonder how the neighborhood is? Does anyone in Chicago rent big old and black police cars for the weekend?

The police car wasn't from Chicago, it was from Mt. Prospect, the Chicago suburb were I grew up. My brother works for the city of Mt.Prospect, maybe he can get you one. The downtown Artist Frame service is in one of the most upscale areas of the city, the suburban one is in Arlington Heights near Mt. Prospect. Other Chicago foods to try are the Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago style hot dogs.

My wife and I were in chicago a couple of years ago. We were staying at a motel near Jay's suburban store, so i checked it out, and it was very nice. (There's a great deli/ breakfast place in the same center too.) Then,we went to his main location on Clybourn St. and his vice president, Mitch, very generously gave us a tour of the entire facility, which was fascinating. Read the first article for a description. The location is fine. It's an older commercial/warehouse type area which is currently being rehabbed (dare I say "gentrified") into upscale-oriented businesses. Jay has a huge building with a beautiful framing shoroom on the first floor attached to his home accessories store. Down the street he has a corporate art business, and a garden store/ floral shop. It is a very well coordinated group of businesses.

An interesting point made by jay in the article, i thought, was that the framing business really has more to do with the home decor business than the art business. I agree with this completely. Think about it. Much of what we frame really isn't traditional "art", but rather memorabilia, photographs, etc. We are creating home decor.
