Who goes to college to become a framer

or maybe...

Who becomes a framer after college?

Did it help? Seriously enquiring (from someone who didn't go to college)

Everything helps.

College helps you learn to deal with people and solve problems. It's not the ONLY way to learn those things, but it's a good way.

Six years of college made me a better framer and, oddly, 28 years of framing makes me a better "customer care analyst"* for a health insurance company.

* I was off today so the title may have changed yet again. I haven't checked my email.

The physics, chemistry, art histroy, not to mention business education, that
can come from college are vital to success in framing, especially in its preservation aspects.

Where's the confusion here? Is Big Boss aware of this problem? There's an insubordination issue here. What good is a policy if it isn't adhered to? Whether or not the employee agrees with it, it's still policy. Does she understand that this is "policy" rather than your "opinion"? This goes beyond whether or not a diploma should be drymounted. That really isn't the issue, is it?

If Big Boss does the disciplining, I'd say it's time.
Big boss is aware of the problem and tells me to "be patient, she's young". Fortunately, as Master Framer in this shop, nothing gets to the fitters without going through me, so if something strikes me as unkosher, I take whatever action I deem necessary. If I am unsure of what to do, I either look it up or come here and ask. Little girl is getting one more Saturday to either toe the line, or she's out of here. I'm sitting her down at this computer Saturday morning and having her read this entire thread and the one referenced earlier on.

I would not consider it very clever to point out to her that you have been discussing her on an open forum...............in fact I would suspect that it is possible illegal what you have being doing.....

I council prudence and that you reconsider what you are thinking of doing....

This is a HR (Human Resources) issue and as such the law whether it is in Ireland or anywhere else would require that HR issues are confidential between the parties concerned.....

How would you like it if your boss discussed you on an open public forum !!!!!

Again I council that you take some professional HR advice before you proceed with your plan of action.

Perhaps you should give a little more consideration to that young persons feelings....

I agree with Dermot, not only are you airing dirty laundry, but there is no consensus here, either. She would point to those of us who do dry mount diplomas to support her position.

Elaine

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
No,no, no, no, NO!!!

What they said!! Not cool, opening yourself and owner to other issues, etc.

Clear communication, and documentation of the issues is what is necessary. The documentation is a CYA, but necessary. Sit her down and speak to her, have it typed on a paper, and make her sign it stating that she understands the discussion, etc. Usually by the third time of doing this, you have basis and documentation for dismissal. In NY we have at-will employment, but after 90 days you have to have "cause" and you better be able to prove it.

Also, a clearer definition of your "role", title are a necessity. Once one EE is insubordinate, it snowballs and you will have a mutiny on your hands. Get your position/authority defined and communicated to the others by the OWNER, then you can execute policies, etc.

my 2 cents

What the others said.....

Having her read this thread would probably end your position at the frame shop. Did you not say at one point that you wanted to put her over your knee? Harrassment? Probably not, but could be interpreted as such.

A final talk with her about how to handle documents (in your opinion) would be a much more tactful and beneficial way to handle the problem. If she still doesn't get it (and the boss agrees) then she's gone.

You need to go back and read what YOU said about her, consider how you would feel if you were discussed on an open forum before you insist that she sit down read this thread. A really, really bad idea that could get ugly.

And if you're lucky, she won't find this thread by chance.

Normally moderators don't delete on demand, but at least one will consider it under the circumstances. If you happen to decide that would be a good idea.

Yeah, I agree, This thread is a lawsuit waiting to happen. It is one thing to get a consensus on why you don't dry mount diplomas but you have made some personal comments about her. Don't show her this thread! I didn't quite understand why you needed to come to us for back up, I bet you have more years experience than she has been alive, you don't need any back up. I'd cut her loose.

I'd be pretty mad if any employee of mine blurted something like this into the ether instead of to me.

I'd expect the other employee to be pretty mad too!

The older I get, the more I come to realize that I'm never to old to stop learning and it's my priveledge to share my knowledge with others. The boss is right. She's young and needs to learn. Lose the attitude Seth, you're a nice guy, and it will get you nowhere.

Now, on the matter of the document. I had a retired Captain come in years ago with a diploma from 1937 on sheep's skin that looked almost like someone had krinkled it their hand. He was a wonderful elderly gentleman who asked me to do my best to flatten her out and frame it. I told him I would do my best, but I needed to research this process and have a comfort level before I proceded. This particular document obviously was not replacable. I read Vivian's book on the subject and even called her to discuss options, and the piece turned out beautifully and I learned a new process.

It takes patience not only to learn but to teach.

Ron even if you delete this thread .............there is always the archived back up that is not that difficult for “Joe” public to access..............and has the right to access.............the only possible way to delete this thread is if ALL posters agree and ask the “site owner” to remove what they have posted.........though I suspect that what has been posted on this site/forum is now in some back up in about 3 if not more places around the world.............

In fact at this stage it may be even illegal for you to delete this thread..............you could be seen as been complicit in what Seth is doing...........and has said......

PFG, Picture Framing God
Then again it is unsigned - all anyone can actually PROVE is what computer it came from or maybe a choice of several on the same connection - hey, it could even be someone trying to drop someone else, that they have a grudge against, in it.

There's this too ....

We have a new, young employee who is really great; respects my position as the end-all and be-all god of framing that I am, and never sells drymounting on her diploma orders. She always listens to my explanations as to why we don't do this, how refreshing.
OK - if you click the blue arrow in the quote you can see it has been messed with, but it's the internet, and it definitely can be messed with.

I'll bet it's illegal just to READ this thread. Let me check.

I checked with my son, who might go to law school some day. The 1,532 of you who have read this thread, or even thought about reading it, are already in BIG trouble. You should settle your affairs immediately and prepare to become Paris Hilton's cell-mate.

The other 3,279 Grumble members are okay so far but there is safety in numbers so everybody should send a link to this thread to someone who might not have read it yet.

I almost always dry mount diplomas. They're usually framed for longevity, and they look better that way. Of course, I do always explain the process to the customer and it becomes their ultimate decision, not mine or my employee's. But....if you can't win the respect of your employee, that is truly an issue.

Heck.....I wonder has Ireland and the US an extraction agreement......

or would they just ship me to one of those “secret” (yeh you know the ones everyone in Europe knows about) CIA camps in Europe ...

they might even use one of those private jets they have hopping around Europe.............I have always wanted to fly private.....

If anyone is looking for me I will be in Spain for the next six days......my Mobile/Cell number is +353 87 2575059.....

This young lady could become the biggest player in the framing game, surpassing even the big boxes when she owns all our shops.

Then she can dry mount whatever the #### she wants.

I have to say that if you call yourself the Master Framer...that is sad. If you need a title like this to impress people it is not working. There are people out there teaching classes to all us that don't use a title like that. I am sorry but this makes me sick. The couple of people that have used this title in the past that i have met are long winded stort tellers that usually are making mistakes like the rest of us. But we admit to not knowing every little detail.

I am done with this, I can't listen to type of junk

In this shop, Master Framer=the only one with a certification, the only one who is capable of designing, cutting the mats, fitting, doing the conservation work, the only one who knows all of the machinery; both how to work it and how to maintain/repair it. I am the one who is responsible for training the employees, and solving any problems that crop up in any stage of the job. I am also the one who sets policy as to how to handle the artwork. I've also been framing for nigh on 28 years, reading Decor, PFM and the Grumble daily to keep abreast on any new developments in the field and keep my knowledge current. If that doesn't qualify me as this shop's Master Framer, what would?

Bog-

You've been doing this for 28 years. My recommendation would be to invest in your own shop. One where you can make and enforce policies of your own, since that is what it seems like you want to do.

Even as a store manager for a franchise framing store, I could discipline, fire, and hire who I wished, and how I wished to do so... I would reconsider your self-given title... You may be your shop's "Master Framer", but that's all you are Master of, yourself.

Honestly, Seth, I would suggest that you take Ron up on his offer to delete this thread.

Boy Boggie, you're really gettin' the frost knocked off your window panes on this one!!

Geez, I am almost considering a red phone contact to Omar and his crew, (still retired), and have them come in on a search and destroy mission for you! :smileyshot22:

Have you considered taking that long awaited vacation on the coast of Crete under an assumed name with the lovely Blanche .......... uh, I meant to say beautimous Bertha??? (Let's dispense with using real names from now on.) :######: (<--- That was supposed to be a zipper mouth, not a cuss word!!!)

I understand from second hand coverage of this thread .............. (honest, your honor, I never read a single word of that thread nor have I actually logged onto that forum in years!!!), ......... that you have gone from being congratulated for doing what is probably the right thing to do in a mounting situation such as you have mentioned to being tried and almost convicted of child abuse, bending the morals of an innocent young lady, harassing a coworker, and total breach of etiquette in dicipline with corporal punishment thrown in for effect!! Wow! And all that in a New York City minute!!

I suggest that you pack her young tush up and ship her off to the Framing Capitol of the World, North Carolina, (or is that South Dakota??), whatever, and let them do some mind conditioning on her. I understand that those rednecks back in the hills can cut a mat opening at 40 yds. with a double bitted axe and mount a diploma using nothing but owl spit and sassafras leaf hinges and it is totally reversible AND carries a 90 day limited warranty with proof of purchase!! :help:

A couple of months of that kind of intensive training should pump her butter churn for many years to come!! :icon9:

Now, about that title ....................................

Yeah, Ron, ask yourself what Alan Shore would do..............................

Thanks for the clear-up, my next guess was going to be Oregon.

BTW, if you have any success with your bid on Celebrity Cellmate of the month, would ya put in a good word to her mother for me?

Thanks in advance.
