Omega Moulding?

A regional supplier has dropped them, and we have the option of doing so, or ordering directly. For those of you who deal directly, how has it been?

Omega is one of our suppliers.
I have known Judith LeBeaux, our Omega Rep. for many years.

A few years ago on the Grumble I mentioned our Omega Rep in a thread about Omega.
I mentioned Judy in the thread and that I've known her and worked with her for many years and she's great to work with.

A few days after my post in that thread, Judy contacted me and told me that her boss called her into his office....
She thought "Uh, Oh, what did I do"..:help:
Her boss at Omega had seen my post praising her on the Grumble and gave her the "thumbs up"..
She called to thank me and we exchanged hugs the next time she came to our shop.

Omega isn't perfect and none of our many suppliers are perfect.
Roma and LJ are not what they used to be...

Well, just getting the next 200 framed pictures going to California with another 150 for local business locations along with the endless stream of walk in retail stuff.
40 large gallery wrapped canvases, some with the sides painted for floaters in the mix.
We are now stretching about 30 canvases a month, many going into floater frames.

Bottom line for me is, none of our suppliers are perfect, It's how, and how quickly, they take care of the problems and issues that arise because with our commercial accounts, we have absolute deadlines on the framing and installations.

Yep, they've been a good vendor for me. They've taken care of problems. I can fax or phone orders which I like & I have a good local rep.

Great company - easy to work with when ordering, good moulding selections, good equipment and accessories supplier, excellent response when an issue arises, and the rep is my favorite.

If you are not a frequent user of their products forget it. Every time I went to order my login would fail. I was told if no order in 30 days my account would get locked. Problem was I didnt use them much as I was a new customer and was just getting started with them - didnt even have any corner samples after months of waiting which makes it hard to order frames. I gave up in frustration.

Yikes! I knew accounts could be deactivated if not used in a very long time, (requiring reapplication), but thirty days is insane. (Unless 'deactivated' and 'locked' mean different things there?). It brings to mind a surprise from a different company. As our regional source doesn't carry all their products, we set up a direct account. When chops came with the worst raggedy edges we've ever seen, I called to suggest sharpening their saws. The warehouse reply was that, since 90% of their orders are length, it's not cost effective to spend more on saw blades for the few who order chops. Hadn't expected that, but at least they were honest.

They may be honest but I am not sure how smart. The cost of keeping blades sharp vs. the cost of the average chop? Seems pretty easy to decide.

Idiots. Either do the job right or don't do it all.

We love them. We are lucky in that they deliver by truck to us once a week. We have done well with their box program, and their close-outs have made many a nice value frame. We can also get Rising mat boards (my favorite) and ArtGlass from them. They are the only ones who have been able to deliver a consistent and unflawed matte black moulding. It doesn't hurt that they have an excellent website and we have an excellent rep. All good.

We almost never order chops for any of our jobs.
We are a very high volume commercial and retail frame shop.

The few times that we might order a chop, mostly for shipping issues or sometimes the moulding company has issues with the quality of the lengths that have a number of flaws so they only want to send a chop, so we order the size a little larger than the actual frame size, even if it's just an inch larger.
This can help if the chops have been banged on the ends after or during shipping so we can clean up the ends.
That way we can cut the 4 chopped frame sides to the actual size on our own shop saw that is excellent and it will cut with no chipped corner or dented corner issues.

We do this on occasion, as well. Never a need with Nurre Caxton, because they pack so well. But with a couple other companies.

Like so many suppliers, their proximity somewhat dictates their fan base. I used to order from Omega on a regular basis, but that was in the late 70's, early 80's when stocking length was the norm. When the chop services started allowing for greater selection, we had to drop Omega because the shipping costs were too high. We limited our sources to distributors between Atlanta and Miami, and there were a lot of them.
I liked Omega, and the only problem I ever had with them was their rep who managed to screw up every order I place directly with him.
You might want to see if they have a "square cut" chop option, if the quality of their cuts is an ongoing issue. Their excuse about the chop side not being worth the cost of blade sharpening is pretty lame.

For the sake of clarity: that comment was made by a supplier other than Omega.

I've had very similar experiences with them. They set me up with an account and a very good discount structure. We picked out hundreds of samples. We faxed in all of the information they requested. We never got the samples and when we would call about it they couldn't find our account and set up a new one but would keep telling us they didn't receive the information that we kept faxing over. We just couldn't get anything set up with them no matter how hard we tried. So, unfortunately I couldn't tell you how they are since I could never set up an account. I too gave up in frustration.
