Hi. Does anyone know of another company (major tape and adhesive company) similar to Specialty Tapes? I have been running into problems lately with a few items from them... mainly ATG tape. I am looking for another alternative. Thanks for any info.

They were in Atlanta in 2002. I did not go this year. I liked the product. It has a carrier medical lace type in between acrylic adhesive.

My staff however did not like the heavier tackness. Go know.

They have an adv in Octobers Picture Frame Magazine, page 16

Thanks Dermot for the info.

I emailed Brian Welch at UK Industrial Tapes and this was his reply (very fast response..only a couple of minites):

Hi Andrew
Many thanks for your enquiry did you pick us up from our web site I presume you did if you can confirm that would be great as we track this on our system We manufacture our ATG tape over in the UK We have a company over in the States called American Speciality Adhesive Products Inc based in LA tel number is 888 355 8214 Neal Bartlett or Michelle Bartlett are the contacts, Neal and Michelle run the company and are shareholders I have copied ASAP on the email and Neal will be in touch as we have a number of ATG tapes which we stock at ASAP Inc.

Many thanks for your interest it is very much appreciated.

Brian Welch

Thanks again.

Andrew,

I don't know what type of problem you have been having with their ATG but we too recently had a small problem with some ATG. They stood by the product and replaced the product to make us happy. They are a good company and I would make sure that you have contacted them about the problem before switching companies.

Andrew -- Have been using ATG from Tape Products for a couple of years. They ship to me by the case (72 rolls). They are nationwide but you can check to see if they have a rep in your area. Price seems pretty negotiable. I'm currently at about 1.49 for SCA T002 - 1/2" x 36' their website is www.tapeproducts.com

ASAP, aka, UK Industrial Tapes had a booth at Atlanta this year also. I have been using the tapes for over a year now and like the aggresiveness of the adhesive alot for holding mats together and also attaching dust covers.

This year I picked up a couple of their rolls of fillet tape and it works every bit as well as the rest of their line. I recommend trying it. If you call them, they will ship out some sample rolls for you to play with.

For some of my projects I need the most aggressive ATG I can get. Currently I use 3M #696 tape.

Framerguy,

How can you compare the ASAP tape with 3M #696 tape?

Thanks,
Bork

Peter what tapes did you refer to in your post on 09-30-2002 11:39 AM?

I also like the strength the surgical liner adds to this ATG tape. It is available in an acid free line. United is full line distributor of these new tapes.

There is no better person in the trade than Neil Bartlett. He is a true pleasure to deal with. He has an extensive background in the industry, but new to the Tape biz.

I would call them and speak to either Neil or his wife. They will take care of you.

I've never had a bad deal with anything I've ever done with him.

AJ, if you thought my recommendation on the saw was good, you're gonna love this one.

Tell Neil I sent you

It's my opinion that the ASAP tape that I use is at least as aggresive as 969 tape. I recently had to remove a dust cover from a frame package that I had accidently torn while moving, and I had one heck of a time getting the tape completely off the back of the frame!

That may be a bane or a benefit depending on your point of view. When the tape is fresh, you can easily remove it by tearing the dust cover and slowly pulling it away from the frame surface. The surgical carrier seems to help hold the ATG together and makes fresh removal quite easy with hardly any ATG residue left on the frame. Once it sets awhile and "seasons" it becomes so highly aggresive that it is difficult to remove without the aid of solvents.

The fillet tape is one of the strongest I have ever used. If you don't position the fillet accurately and apply any pressure at all, it will delaminate the matboard it is stuck to when trying to remove for repositioning. I used to use 3M 1/4" ATG for fillets but ASAP's fillet tape is much stronger than 3M's in my opinion.

They have the 1/2" ATG in regular and "acid free" and the only drawback to their product is the size of the roll. I was accustomed to using the 60 yd. roll of 3M's tape and ASAP tape only comes in small rolls so far as I know. I'll check on the fillet tape tomorrow but I know it comes in larger rolls, I just don't know how many yards are in their rolls.

As I stated previously, give them a call and request a sample to try out. And make your on decisions about their tapes.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

Bob Carter: I spoke to Neil Bartlett yesterday afternoon and he is sending me a catalog, price list, and a few samples of ATG tapes and other tapes i am interested in. Their prices ARE very reasonable and negotiable and is willing to "lock in" on certain box-quantity prices. Example: 60 yard ATG tape for approx $2.00/roll by the case of 72 rolls.... these prices are the amount i would save if i purchased to 3 (or 5?) cases or more. Again, thanks for the info Bob... i am sure glad i went with the Ledsome saw. ajh

Andrew,

Is that a correct quote from ASAP on the ATG tape??

We had to pay $2.53 per roll for a case of 72 rolls plus $9.00 shipping just last year. And the rolls were only 1/2"x32 yds per roll. I can't imagine that they altered their prices THAT much to get business here in the States!

Edit:

Just to make sure we are talking about the same product, I am referring to their PH7-70 Double Sided ATG tape. they also make lines of fillet tape, a PH7-70 single sided mounting tape, self adhesive hinging and linen tapes, and a number of other tape products.

Framerguy, you stated:

""""Just to make sure we are talking about the same product, I am referring to their PH7-70 Double Sided ATG tape. they also make lines of fillet tape, a PH7-70 single sided mounting tape, self adhesive hinging and linen tapes, and a number of other tape products.""""

The price they quoted me per case is NOT the acid free ATG tape. Neil Bartlett asked me how much i currently pay for a roll of ATG tape. I told him for a 1/2" X 120 yard roll (Specialty Tape #D990ATG-12120), it costs me $4.41 per roll. This price is Specialty Tape's "case price of 72 yards", BUT, I don't have to order a whole case to get this price. Neil Bartlett then gave me the price of exactly $1.98 per roll, IF bought by the FULL case of 72 rolls. Maybe, just maybe he quoted me a price based on the 32 yard rolls instead. I don't believe, because if THAT is the case, the price for 4 rolls or 32 yards per roll would not even come close to Specialty Tapes price of ONE roll of 120 yards per roll (4 x $2.53 = $10.12!!!).

I will keep you posted when i place my first order within the next 2 weeks.
