Like a big dope I sold a mat without checking to see if it is available oversized. I had C621610 White 8 ply black core and managed to ignore the computer when it told me it was not available. My choices seem to be slim pickens, in fact non existent. I am planning to get an over sized white w/black core and an over sized black w/black core and drymounting the two together to get 8 ply. I have never done this, is it feasible? Or would I be better off just cutting the white/black and then cutting a second mat w/1/8 inch reveal with the black on black? If I do drymount the two together and cut it as an 8 ply is it just the same as cutting a regular 8 ply? It seems denser to me.

Of course, I need this to be done on Monday. This one fell through the cracks for sure. What a dope.

In fact, just this minute I decided I don't want to be a farmer any longer. Maybe I'll diversify and start selling batteries, everybody needs batteries, right? What could go wrong with them? You just sell them and take their money and put them in a bag and send them on their way......(sigh)

Or maybe scotch tape......that stuff wouldn't even require heavy lifting......

dare you try coloring the core where it will be seen? Or try the bainbridge series of 8 plys--they have many oversized. Or am i being dumb on this one and not understanding the problem?

Michael, I'm sure I am the one being dumb but I don't see any oversize white w/black core in 8 ply. I can get oversized white w/blackcore in the four ply. I guess this is an example of how tired I am, I never considered painting the bevel.......but the thing is, it is oversized, I have one shot at it and painting bevels isn't a sure deal, accidents do happen. It just seems mounting two together should be more failsafe? I'd be a little more adventurous if it wasn't due tomorrow.

Hi Kathy,

I've had good luck creating deep bevels by using a CMC to cut a series of 4 ply mats and adding 1/16" to the boarder on each successive layer. It's important, for the sake of accuracy, to have the CMC cut the outside of the mats also. In this case you could use the desired white with black core top mat and any black with a black core for the lower layer. I've tried drymounting boards together, but the tissue always shows. Placing ATG 1/4" out from the opening on the bottom layer of matboard seems to be the best way to keep the boards together. I'd experiment with a few small mats to start with... if it doesn't work I'd hate to feel I owe you two oversize mats!

I don't want to be a farmer any longer.
Kathy,

When did you start farming? I just had to ask.

If you are going to dry mount the boards together and don't want the adhesive to show, then why not trim the adhesive so that it will not be in the drop out or at the cut line, but just outside of it.

Then cut the board as you normally do an 8-ply.

Good luck!

I have laminated boards together in the past with a water based starch adhesive applied with a paint roller then pressed. I saw one of them recently and checked it over, even after 6 years there is no visible join.

Lance,I have one customer who has me make 16 ply mats for her.

I have used your method for well over 15 years. We used to do a lot of wet mounting in a vacumn press. It works great with mat board. There is no carrier as with dry mount tissue that will leave a thin line. The paste will just soak into the fibers of the matboard.

I do not know what the manufacturers use to laminate their matboard together; but, it has to be a similar process. Just take a scrap of board and let it soak in a tray of water. The top and back paper will just float apart from the core as the adhesive gives way.

Kathy,

Bainbridge TM8321V will get you to 6-ply. Let the customer know and you might find that all is well.

(If you know someone with a Wizard - it cuts at flatter angle than most manual mat cutters - revealing a larger bevel.)

Thank you Pat! I think 6ply will do just fine. I just called one of my local suppliers and they will get it to me today. I am so spoiled having 3 local suppliers with daily delivery. Two of them even same day delivery. Usually I have time to correct mistakes like this, but this one was needed in a hurry and of course I didn't notice my error until I pulled the matboard. Thanks again.

Mark, Shows how tired I was. Farmer?I haven't had a day off in two weeks. I even came in and worked on Turkey Day for about 3 hours. Don't see a day off until December 25. Not complaining, just tired......

Oops, back to square one...........they called me and told me it doesn't come 40x60. I can't even find those numbers to check my specifier. Drat, it is back to the drawing board.....

Kathy,

The number is correct - I have the sample in front of me - curved corner and 40x60 written on the back. The Bainbridge "TM" mats are too new for their specifier. Try another supplier.

Kathy- This suggestion may be coming too late for your current project, but anyway-- If you can find a 4-ply black-core board to use, just make your mat out of that, but cut the opening about 1/8" big in both directions. Then cut strips of B.C. board with a bevel along one edge, and "windmill"-install them (as you would with Bevel Accents) within the opening of your mat. Voila! Instant 8-ply bevel!
I use this technique all the time, just for aesthetic reasons. You can create any combination of multi-layer bevel effects- it looks similar to the "laminated" mats that Chris Paschke used to advocate.

Have fun.

Rick, this place is working on my last nerve this week.(Just ask Deb)I am just beside myself right now. I need to just make this order go away. As of right now, I have a piece of too small 8 ply, one piece of too small 6 ply, one piece of 4 ply white 40x60 and one piece of 4 ply black 40x60. I also have LJ sending me a piece of the T8321 in the correct size in the morning. So, I figure I've invested about $80 in various matboards for one lousy order.

Your idea is brilliant!!!!!!!! I will attempt it tonight after I have a chance to leave for a couple of hours and C-A-L-M D-O-W-N. Plus I will have the 6 ply coming as back up tomorrow if this fails. Thanks for the idea!

P.S. Pat, I'm not sure why my first supplier says it isn't available oversized. Both my other suppliers say it is available. But, as luck would have it one was out of stock and LJ doesn't do same day. But at least it is on the way. Can't go wrong with LJ for sure.
