I think we should have a contest on photo restoration.

Give all the participants the exact same picture and have them upload the results of their labor.

Photo restoration has become a huge part of many of our shops. Some of us mill it out and others tackle it ourselves. But seeing some of the WONDERFUL examples on here lets me know there are some very capable people around.

Make it open to everyone, including photo restoration businesses. That way, we can SEE the difference that perhaps having a professional doing photo restoration can make for us (I've also seen work by individuals that has rivaled or excelled those by businesses...and who knows maybe it'll result in a job somewhere one day....).

The work should be the work of a single person.

Perhaps we can have different levels of restoration as well as a summary at the end explaining the process you used.

Do you think?????? (Please move this if it should go somewhere else).

I'm game too. I am very interested in seeing what other grumblers are doing. How can we get the first round going? Who will be the judge? Who selects the target image to be worked on?

Hey Janet, since you brought up the idea, why dont you pick an image. However, you must send it to everyone who participates, or at least make it available for download. It needs to have enough resolution to make it realistic. You can send the image file via YouSendit.com for free.

Of course we will need some guidelines such as:
1) make sure we all use the same resolution
2) set a due date
3) no farming out -- must be done by our shop!

Maybe we all vote for the best job. The winner then will have the podium to explain the technique used, tools, etc.

Sorry I didn't see these replies before. Glad there's some interest!

I think if I attached a photo that needs restoration to a thread then others could download it. Or perhaps I'll put it in my dropbox and display the public location.

As far as the resolution, we'd stick with the resolution of the original...you think?

I'll have to do some digging to find something. It's hard to find challenging images without going over the top.

I do want to include restoration companies in the contest, but it should be the work of a single individual. Anyone else agree with this?

Meanwhile, if anyone has a photo that need to be restored, send me a PM and I'll give you my email address.

Please send me your images you'd wish to have considered by March 6th. After I sift through a few submissions, I'll pick the one I believe is best for the contest and post it somehow with a link to the contest thread (and I'm sure I'll have to get Mike to help me create it).

Grumblers will pick the winners.

If anyone else would like to submit, please contact me by Monday evening.

Thanks!

Here's my link for the restoration image.

Please submit your restorations by April 1 for voting :)

This is going to be interesting. I have seen many levels of photo restoration over the years and, like those Photoshop Fail websites, not everyone who has the tools can achieve appropriate results.

Good luck everyone!

Hey everybody...just a reminder...only a few more weeks left.

I know we have some talented Grumblers....

Unfortunately folks, although we had an interest in seeing results and a very nice picture for editing submitted, there were contest submissions. I was hoping a few would trickle in over the weekend, but it didn't happen.

At this point, if you have worked on this picture and missed the submission date.... and would like to post the fruits of your labor, please do so...but at this point there is no contest.

Oh well, it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I guess I'll just have to keep working on my photoshop skills and restore the durned thing meself! LOL.

Talk about missing the boat on that one. I would have loved to take part in this contest, but it looks like there weren't too many serious takers. I didn't even see this post until today. If it happens again, or a few of us decide to do this for fun, I'm in!

I think you would have found more of us if the "proposal" had been on the main forum.... the "contest" could have been on the Voting Booth.

But very interesting problems to overcome with this image. An excellent challenge. I wonder what would come of the same idea for the PMA/PPFA convention.... restore then frame. :D

I posted my comment on there months ago and have yet to hear anything about it. I think they gave up.
