I had a rush job in December for a plaque and award company. The project was to frame 6 fuses (tubes) from a radio stations first tansmitter (since the 20's). The chops arrived red label from a supplier; but, I was not happy with the way they were cut. I ordered replacements to be installed after the presentation dinner.
The award company took the framed pieces away and I told the owner of my intentions to replace the frames. He was gun shy as to having me replace the frames! He had several problem with the radio station in providing the finished project to the station. It was his suggestion to wait until the plaques in the frames had to be replaced.
Time marches on. The end of February...over 60 days. This award compant comes in for another project and tells me that he has not heard from this station since the project at the begining of December. He thinks that he has lost the account.
I contacted the station and replaced the frames. Pickup and delivery within 24 hours! My comment to the staton's management was that I was being pressured by my supplier to have the defective frames returned for credit. I also stated that I was not trying to solicite them directly for business.
This week... 2 weeks after the frames were replaced...I get a call from the plaque and award company scolding me for contacting the station.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS...TRYING TO HAVE ONLY THE BEST POSSIBLE PRODUCT OUT THERE WITH YOUR NAME ON IT.

Right or wrong, that is exactly what I would have done. It may be a weak defense, but having notified the plaque company earlier that you intended to replace the mouldings put them on notice. You have a right to protect your reputation--the most important form of advertising we framers have. It probably will blow over, but sure doesn't feel too good now.

I would have called the award company and asked them if I could call the radio station. Telling the award company what you told the radio station, that you need to send the original frame back.
Ask yourself how would you have felt if someone called one of your customers.

The plaque and award company was contacted and kept abreast of my intentions. I agree that it is appripiate to ask for permission. I also stated that I made the contact in the name of the award compay only after he stated that he lost the account.
