Our bicycle shop friends are changing their website from passive to active, where customers can place orders, etc... They have a good guy helping set it up, and I'm curious as to what tips you might have. For any of you who sell online, how has your experience been?

Shopify. Not cheap, but fast set-up. Way easier than WordPress.

PCI compliance is critical & can be a bugger. Not all fancy, Purdy, advertised to be easy names you see and hear are compliant. They just have marketing departments that will promise things that might not be true.

Also depends upon how hands on or off a person is and their comfort level with software. There are lots if good guys regarding websites but not necessarily up to date with ecommerce requiremants

Hardly a month goes by where a PCI scan does not find a newly discovered vulnerability that requires a patch to keep the PCI gods happy.

We use Bigcommerce as our e-commerce platform and it's been great. It is a little pricey, but we have had zero issues in 2 years and their customer support is fantastic. All of these e-commerce platforms present themselves that you could build the website yourself, but I strongly suggest investing in a professional to design and build the front end of the website. Be sure they have experience working with Shopify or Bigcommerce so they can connect everything.
