How do you reward a customer who gives you business by recommending your shop?

No formal program. I am sure to thank them and take good care of them on future business. If it's a corporate account that leads to a fair size job / installation then surely a nice bottle of wine is warranted.

When I recommend a company I don't expect anything in return. The reward has already been received - a great product/service/experience that went beyond expectations.

If you are talking about offering an incentive to promote your products, that is an entirely different story, and IMO not nearly as effective. That's because genuine feelings can't be bought.

A gift has no strings, but generosity can be contagious.

I'd say they were due a little 'gizzit' on their next order. :D

But it's a completely different story when they come along with promises of referrals on the basis of you giving them a big discount. Don't fall for it. Nothing is safe until it's dead.

I don't have a formal program for this either. I make sure to thank them and expressing how grateful I am. They know I freely give my time and attention to whatever and whomever comes through my doors. They recommend me for a reason. I do not offer coupons or discounts. In fact, quite a few of my customers would be embarrassed if I did.
