Well, here it is the new location!! Landlord said he would finish cleaning, but he is gone for a week, so we will do a little while he's gone so that we can get started. Actually unloaded the design counter out of the back of the pickup, FINALLY. Now I can see behind me when I drive.

Lots to do, but I think it will turnout quite nice.

I'll keep you posted on the progress!

The inside (behind the blue curtain is the scary bathroom/break room area, AJ's working on making it better):

Congrats on the new digs Mary and AJ. Scout looks right at home too.

I wish you guys the best in your new place.

    Congrats MaJa! Very exciting...

It looks great and right on 101! Fab location, huh? So you have the whole building and your own parking? Awesome!!! The space looks great. Lots of room. What are you doing in the retail space besides design? Gallery? Retail? Or combination?

Are you going to paint the outside? Like the stone panel in front though...

Congrats again. I'm really excited for you - can't wait to see your progress. Again, thanx for bringing us along. Hopefully, I'll be next!

Mary, get a COMING SOON sign up quickly!! Great visibility on that corner.

  6. MaJa

    MaJa SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

    Thanks guys!

Not painting the outside of the building, it's pretty fresh. Yes, we are right on 101 at a traffic light with our own parking!! We have the whole building!! This is awesome. Parking is a premium. There is also a nice new city lot less then a block away.

We are going to be doing digital printing (Epson, must order my Epson!!) and some retail (yup, got get working on that, too!). We are getting a vinyl cutter to do a little sign work. Mostly our own, but I have a few other ideas, too.

Mark, I'd already thought of a banner. I was going to wait until I got my Epson, but now that I think about it, that's going to take too long. Off to design my banner. I will send it to the guys who bought the sign shop in FL and have them ship it to us. I really don't think anyone around here can do what I want ... but I'll look!

How exciting, I'm envious of all that space, lots of potential in that building.

Find out if there is someone in your area selling used store fixtures and check craigslist before buying anything.

These places are a gold mine for things like "Coming Soon" signage, construction materials, flooring and business furniture.

Wow, I envy you the space and the light. Amazing.

And the location and the street light! The only folks missing that would be blind folks and they probably don't buy many frames anyways!!!

Looks like a nice building in a nice setting. Too bad you can't lose the mansard style overhang, though. Maybe you could do some kind of effective signage that would both distract from it and promote your name and service. Check with the local municipality about the sign regulations.
Best of luck in the new location.

    SCORE!

We found a music store closing. We were able to get a bunch of fixtures including (3) 3' tall shelves (3) 6' tall shelves, 2 bar stools with back, two sign stands, a rolling three tier table, a card spinner, a wood and glass jewelry type display case that's over 7' long, and a bunch of track lighting (40-50 foot) for $1100!!

    *** Happy Dance ***

We also stumbled onto a fridge at Sears. I asked about used, she said no, I said just looking for my shop. She said WAIT, I have this one, it's new but returned because the customer changed which side the hinges are on and now you have to kick it to get it to close.

$150 for a $680 fridge. I said yes, AJ ... this is the best part ... can't we just put the door back on the other side?!?! LOL - deal of the day, and I was happy with just kicking it!

Scary bathroom area is getting better, but not 100% yet. I've been working on "administrative" tasks! Once I get one thing done, I think of to more ... arrrgh, lol.

It makes me feel good that you guys are interested in our shop!

We've been working and shopping! Still hunting bargains, because that's just who I am!

We needed a vinyl cutter (because I can not function without one - had one at my side for 15 years and we might do a little sign work), so I found one on Cragslist. Well, AJ found some other goodies while we were there. So now we have to go BACK to Salem since the 30" plotter, 64" KeenCut Excalibur Multi-Media Cutter, Rotary Paper Trimer, and Vertical Panel Saw would not all fit in the truck!! It was a heck of a deal and we just could not pass it up.

I've been shopping vendors for our "and more" department and I think we are going to have some cool stuff.

Working on equipment, too. Ordered a desk from Staples and got a free file cabinet! And I found this scanner on ebay! Hurry only two left now. FYI, they cost $2,500 new.

Hunting a chopper now. I think www.skylinepictures.com will be able to hook us up. They helped us sell our saw and CMC before we left FL. Unless some one here has one.

Now at the office ... scary bathroom is coming along! Turns out they painted everything with white latex paint. When I say everything I mean EVERYTHING! Walls and ceiling, okay. Stall door, okay (could have taken that string off the slide lock first). But, formica counter top? Tile walls?? Tile FLOOR!??! Who paints a tile bathroom floor with WHITE LATEX PAINT!??!!? Aaarrrggghhh

I attached a photo of Scout helping me scrub it off. I did the floor and the counter and it took all day. I want to do the walls, but AJ said there's too much to do and he is right. Tomorrow I'm going to get some paint. Sponge the bottom tile part with two or three shades of pink and then paint the top half a light pink.

Speaking of "Demo-Man", he decided we didn't need a wall and then it was gone! He got to get a new saws-all, he was a happy camper. We are getting there!

I also got our old sign shop to print us a coming soon banner and AJ installed it for me! So know people will know what's coming.

Okay, much to do! More photos soon! Thanks guys!

Latex paint huh....don't know what they were thinking, tedious work though!!!

Seem AJ is quite happy and pleased with himself!!!! LOL!
The banner looks great; is it big enough to be seen from the road(s)?

Keep the pics coming! I am enjoying myself!!!!

  29. Kirstie

    Kirstie PFG, Picture Framing God

What kind of printer is going to go with the A3 scanner? And what is the plotter for? We see work come in from plotters, floor plans, signs, drafts, etc.

  30. MaJa

    MaJa SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

Jeff, that is a heck of a price on the plotter. But I'm a plotter snob, lol. I got a Graphtec that is used, but one of the higher end models. Very much like the one I had.

Ylva, the banner could have been bigger, but it is already working. I just talked to AJ who is working at the shop and he said he has people coming in already!! Poor guy, he'll never get any work done. Lucky for him I will be there the next two days.

Mark, that's what life is all about, having fun!! Gosh, AJ got new tools and I got to scrub the floor what's not fun about that ... wait ...

Kirstie, I just ordered our Epson 9900!!! YEA! So excited. Now I have to pick out the media.

I got the plotter for a few things. One is our own sign work. I have been making signs for 15 years and I can not imagine having some one else do the work, lol. Two is we want to be diversified. If we need to make signs to make money now we can. I also want to do some cross over ideas I think will work, such as the "Fat Head" type wall decals.

So obviously more shopping for me today. AJ's been working hard at the shop. Landlord stopped in a dropped off a new sink (yea!) and brought his contractor who will finish out the laminate floor in the open part we made by removing the wall and the other little room that used to be another bathroom I think (double yea!).

I've also been working on my website, www.starfishframing.com. Nothing to write home about, but I got the logo up there and got ride of the Spanish that was there by default.

So much more still to do ....

    Mary,

Wow, things are really coming along! That's great. You two are such a delight that you would probably have fun doing crime scene cleanup... I mean, come on.... smiling while doing scary bathroom floor scrubbing??? Aghhhh....

Can't wait to read and see more. I'm excited for you!

    Fantastic Move....

    Congratulations Mary,

Good move on your part! When do you open - I just scanned the pages a second time, and did not see mention of a date.

What will you do with the stone wall in front - how will you incorporate it into the design and where will the signage go?

All the best and thanks for sharing.

I love how Scout is helping you do the floor, Mary! But here is a really helpful tip for any kind of floor work - buy yourself a nice pair of foam knee pads - they are Heaven sent!!!

  35. MaJa

    MaJa SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer

We are hoping to open mid-May or early June, too much to do at the moment to make a final decision. Every time I cross one thing off the list I think of another (or two).

Last night as I was drifting off to sleep I burst out in laughter. My desk is coming today!!! BUT ... I don't have a chair, lol!! For some reason that truly amused me. I also need to order computer monitors, that would help, too.

Not sure yet about the front of the building. The landlord said he'd put a fee standing sign in for us if we let him put his business on there, too (excavating). We will also be dressing AJ's truck up (hope he likes purple!) and I have a plan for the windows.

Knee pads would have been an excellent idea. AJ has a pair and uses them for everything. The thought never crossed my mind! LOL

Mary, put some of these photos you posted here, on the website, so people will already get a feel of who you are, what you're doing; and it will make for some great before and after!!!!

Mary, I am impressed with the speed you are working and the progress you are making. We are in the same situation of just having moved and things seem to be taking a lot longer. I think that I will be able to write a book of what NOT to do when moving/renovating (as opposed to John Rane's great thread of his big move)!

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your updates.

Chavie, I'm sure it's not as bad as you think but how about starting a thread about what NOT to do?? Pure selfishness on my part I guess because I hope to be going through this later this year. Also might help you vent! LOL....

I wish you the best of luck in your move and smoooooooth going!

    CHRISTMAS!!

I owe you guys some photos, we've been CRAZY busy, so I will make this short.

CHRISTMAS!! Some of my goodies have started to arrive. I attached a photo of what came in today, including the Epson 9900. I think I will sleep on the box tonight, lol.

My little printing corner is getting close to done. AJ fixed the little bench around the edge and the rotting corner we found (yikes!) and the landlord is having a contractor finish the laminate flooring. Hopefully he will come back soon to finish up.

Most of the "leftovers" from the previous tenets has found a new home. AJ is working on getting mat board storage cabinets built, and LOVING the panel saw. So glad we got that, it has made his life so much better.

They came and carpeted our corner sample wall today!! It's about 9' x 34' and they did it in one big piece. It looks awesome!! Plus there is so much less echo in here now.

Now I have to pick paint colors! I've got the bathroom pretty much under control. It's very pink and purple and I don't care weather you like it or not, lol.

Okay ... back to work ...

Everything's shaping up great! Looks like Scout not only likes to run in the park, but seems to want to play some computer games too. And the scary bathroom doesn't look scary anymore!

Thanx again for sharing, can't wait to hear and see more. The streaming grand opening sounds a terrific idea!

  50. MaJa

Well ... we are making progress!! Starting to actually LOOK like a frame shop, lol. Still tons to do.

The Wizard, Epson 9900, and Vinyl Plotter are all "installed", but have not yet been used, lol. Soon! The super scanner does work great.

AJ has been a building fool! He's built mat board storage (forgot to photo that), 2 tables that are 8 ft x 8 ft (one will get a carpet top soon), and is working on a stand for the flat files!

As you can see, we have a vast selection of moulding for our customers to choose from, lol. Okay, back to work for me ...
