Timeline coming to facebook pages

FrameMakers

PFG, Picture Framing God
For those of us with business facebook pages, they are about to change whether you want to or not. The Timeline format will be coming to your page as of March 30th.

Now would be a great time to think about how this is going to affect the appearance of your page and how you want to showcase your shops image.

Coming? It's already here if you choose to use it, I did and I think it looks awesome check it out. I know I need a better graphics program, still using Microsoft publisher, any suggestion are welcome as long as they are cheap.

I love it too, but I have not been given the option of using it. There was a message up this morning, when I clicked on it, it just took me to my standard profile.

Got it now. Not the design I want, but that will come later today.

I really hope they don't make everyone switch to it. I can't stand looking at Timeline,
and much prefer the other way. Could be that it would be better for a business, but
with my friends, I'd rather not have to see that jumble.

Just went to your page, Randy, and I did like the Timeline set-up there.
I just hope the personal pages don't have to switch.

P.S. I liked your 'tossing the box' photo.

Very interesting read. I do feel bad for those companies that set up to service facebook users with apps and landing pages. Their businesses just went poof.

For those interested, the timeline image size is 850x315

A Jumble in the Grumble? Not at all it is a true timeline all you have to do is click on the center line and times smooths out. it is just compressed for everyday use.

Andy Shayla when are you going to start friending us?...geez

Very interesting read. I do feel bad for those companies that set up to service facebook users with apps and landing pages. Their businesses just went poof.

I use North Social software for my landing page and I would imagine that they are planning in advance for this change. However, I am really surprised that Constant Contact is in the midst of their big social networking rollout. From what I can tell, they are just offering Fan Gate (Welcome / Landing) pages with software that allows the use of templates. Their timing is terrible, and what surprises me is that they did not predict this. Everyone knew Timeline Pages were coming.

Remember that most viewers don't see our Pages when they log on. Where they see us is in their own news feeds, which have not changed--yet. New viewers see our Pagees. The job that most of us have over the next month is to create a banner that says something about our business within the alloted space. I will be interested to see what others come up with. Please post yours here when you create them!

I need to take some time to look into what this will do to Facebook "Like" feeds such as the one that many of us have on our websites. As it is, the feeds are blank when the viewer is already logged into FB, another annoying feature. I have not yet found another way to introduce a live FB feed to a web site.

Randy, your banner clicks through to an out of date coupon. I clicked to make sure that we can link these. So working on a full size image will also be necessary. I'm sure we will change our seasonally.

FB ads may loose business over this as well as many ads point to Fan Gate pages. Mine will be coming down soon, or atleast until I dream up something else to try.

Yea I just tossed up the first thing I found that would fit. But its an interesting idea kinda like an Easter Egg I might make it intentional next time.

Here's the latest - all youse guys who have spent so much time on your Landing Page? Kiss it goodbye when Timeline arrives!
*!#@#$%* Darn it! I just finished my landing page last week. Oh well....
I upgraded my facebook page too and added a banner.
I also added a small online store. It only has items that I sell on my Etsy store but I plan to add more "frame related" items in the future.
For any one interested, here's the link. http://www.facebook.com/arthausframing then click on the "Online Store" tab/icon

I wish I could re-arrange or remove the tabs. I'd like to remove the photos and maybe the likes tab. Anyone know how to do that?

Regards,
Troy

OTOH, I find I rarely go to any other FB walls than my own. I went snooping just now and find no Timeline on some of the most tech-savvy folks, and maybe a glimmer of good news - some individual folks who have it do not have any banner images. Just a blank space.

Hmmmmm.....

Here is Constant Contact's official response.

My guess is that, among other things, FB is trying to eliminante the use of Fan Gate pages altogether. There must be a lot of FB app firms in panic mode today. But really, we all knew this was coming. FB is getting into the "Deal" business and they don't want competition.

So the workaround is to use a postage stamp sized app link near the top of your page to advertise your offer, and/or, to "pin" (sticky) a post at the top of your feed that promotes and links to your offer. Ho hum. This certainly does not have the pizzaz of a big landing page image.

We are probably done with Like building through FB apps anyway. We gained about 150 or so new Likes with the campaign, but it is not something I want to do indefinitely.

It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out, and I am sure there will be many tweaks in the works soon. After we create the banner image and fix the page, I will be interested to see how the FB Like feed now works on our web site. If anyone has done this yet, please post an example.

Meanwhile, having a regularly updated social media presence that links back to your site from various social media sites is still of key importance. And FB is not the only player.

When I first created my cover image i run into a problem where the text on my cover image went under the profile image so I made a guideline for future use. I just thought it might be useful for you too.
It shows you the dimensions and positions of the profile image.

Thanks Troy. A nice time-saver that we will use later this month.

I am waiting on ours until the ned of this month as we still have a Fan Gate page up that I want to use while we can.

Thanks for that. My logo is horizontal, not square, so I'm going to have to figure out a solution for that block.

Mine too Rick, I turned it on a 45° angle.

I only have a few jobs due today, so hopefully will have time to do some designs the profile and cover images.

This krap kept me awake most of last night tossing and turning. I hate that they are squeezing everyone into the same mold. All pages will look identical. And like email newsletters, more and more people will opt out and ignore everything we knock ourselves out to present.

I already have many FB pages which I have had to "hide" because they post too many times. How much you wanna bet they will soon lose the "hide" feature?

Maybe the next version of FB will include those clamps to keep our eyes from closing like in Clockwork Orange.

I am really close to just ditching the whole shebang.

So how much is enough, and how much is too much? I personally don't mind once a day. More than that and I might hit the hide button.
LJ seems to be pretty aggressive with their facebook and puts out some interesting posts. Problem is, I don't want to just be a share site for what they post. I know that many framers that I have liked do just this.

Ok, question a about the banner/cover/whateveritiscalled at the top of the page. Can you change it anytime you like or once you create one, are you stuck with it forever?

By the way Troy, thanks for providing the dimensions and placement like that. Nice reference for when we make ours for our page and the page we administer for a group we belong to.

You can change it as often as you change your underwear, maybe more often :)

It lives in a separate album called covers. You can keep as many as you wish in this folder and change them as often as you like.

It has always astonished me that people post to FB (and presumably other sites) and tell the entire world where they are and what they are doing. I do not give one rodent's patooti that someone just walked into Starbuck$ and is buying an overpriced cuppa joe - and just wait til the burglars in the world realize they will easily know when a person is gone from home.

Although has been noted elsewhere, it is hilarious sometimes when the algorithms go wrong.

Nice job...

So far so good:
Mar, Congratulations....I've not converted my personal FB page nor my business page over to Timeline yet. I've been fighting it...liked it the way things worked. ;)

In any event... I love your diarama... My favorite two items include the "Felix" cat wall clock and the 3M "Red" model 751ATG gun on the table...dating yourself a little with that piece of equipment.
