Timeline coming to facebook pages

Kirstie

rats - I only discovered that I had recommendations a few weeks ago - and now they are gone.

I am sure Facebook will have a reasonable explanation/replacement real soon.
Like the person in the post in the thread I mention said, if you unlike yourself and then like yourself again, you are invited to recommend your business. I did, but I have no idea where it went. It is completely hidden. I have complained to FB support, and I suggest that others do as well. I also suggest making a copy of your recommendations before you transfer to Timeline.

I am still tweaking our new Timeline. We went with a yellow logo for spring and will probably change the banner seasonally. Still working on the apps.

I still don't understand fb apps. It is on my to do list that is getting much much longer.

Dave,
You can build/write/code your own Facebook app or you can use the apps that are already available.
My old landing page is a simple facebook app. That app is actually just a web page embedded and size to fit with an iFrame into a facebook page.
It could be as simple as just an image.
I am now re-coding it to fit into the much wider format (see here: http://www.facebook.com/ArtHausFraming/app_384413961572755 )
I am also thinking of coding another one that would gather emails for newsletters and another one for special offers to fans.

Regards,
Troy

How do I change the icon for an app on my Page?

OK Kirstie,

As I was teaching 7 seminars myself in Las Vegas, I couldn't make your FB class, so will ask the advanced questions here. :D With March 31st fast approaching, I thought that this afternoon I would update my FB page to timeline, and actually their tutorial helps and it went OK.

Surprising in that I made this change on my business page before my personal page...which I've yet to do.

In any event... my question is posted in the subject line above, and FB HELP gives me the following instructions...
  • Open your Page's admin panel
  • From the Manage menu, select Edit Page
  • Select Apps from the left sidebar
  • Click Edit Settings under the anme of the app whose icon you want to change

    so far so good....
  • Click Change next to Custom Tab Image

OK...you lost me. All I see at this point are tabs for Profile and Additional Permissions???
  • On the next screen, click Change next to the existing image
  • Follow the instructions that appear for uploading a new image or deleting the existing image

I'm not a real fan of the change where these app icon/images are all much smaller than they were in the previous version. They appear to "grab" the last image relating to that app.

I will also mention that I love your Cover Photo with the customer images randomly scattered....nice job.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

John

I hope this is right:
Manage (top of page)
Edit Page
Apps
Edit settings...
Click the app you want to change the photo on
Change
Upload a Custom Image page appears
Change
This takes you to an Upload a Page to Tab Image dialog box
Choose file...and I think this gets you the image you want.

Looks good, John!

This evening I "pinned" my first image as a sticky at the top of the timeline. We bought some Island Inernational art at the show and are just getting various artists framed for a spring window.

Kirstie,

I think you missed my point... it is at the step above that I am lost as I do not see a Custom Tab Image?

Thank you for asking the question John.

I have the same issue and am beginning to think that the image of some apps cannot be changed OR can only be changed by the 'creator' of the app if it is not you.

We've also seen that things/postings/topics seem to disappear from the timeline and sometimes reappear later.... sometimes not. Sometimes the timeline is different on different computers. Frustrating as he11 when you're trying to put everything together and topics just placed by an admin disappear from the page.

I'll run a test tonight and see what happens when I try to change another image. I know I was able to change one originally, the Fan Offer one.

Good evening,

I am now going to try to change my Twitter tab image with these steps and will follow them in another window as I type (It was less complicated that I originally thought and previous directions were not correct)

Sign in ot my Facebook Page
Click the Edit pen icon I see when I hover over the tab I want to change
Scroll down to Edit Settings
See Custom Tab Image Change
Click Change
Then a new browser window opens
Click change again
Choose File from my hard drive
Voila! The standard Twitter bird is now the square version of my logo

Not all apps may allow an image change, but so far I have changed this Twitter one and the Fan Offer.

Wow, I really had to search on your page to find these tabs you are discussing. FB sure underemphasizes their presence, one eensy weensy arrow with no mouse-over info to say "More."

Here is another question about Timeline - what are the measurements of photos? I find that anything not square or vertical are cropped idiotically - I tried to post an image of my new business card and unless clicked on, the image was severely truncated.

I really hate the Timeline. Really.

Framar

This just hit me - I bet the cropping of Timeline photos and their inability to deal with horizontal formats is somehow connected to cell phone images - most of them are vertical, right? I have never seen anyone turn their camera sideways to take a picture.....

Heck, most people do not have a clue anymore when I say "Vertical" or "Horizontal." I have to dumb it down to "Portrait" or "Landscape." Oh, that annoys me almost as much as Timeline......

I do this and I don't get any of the tabs you have, there is no "fan of the week" "fan offer" "coupons and news" how do you get those?

Framar

I have blank tabs and all my former Info is gone. No descriptions, no hours (other than whether I am open right now), nuttin'.

Where does that stuff go now?

Nevermind - I just located the teensy tiny "about" - yeesh!

Recommendations are back for Timeline Pages. So glad to have my 19 or so recommendations back on the page.
If you had some before, they should be on your page now. I was poking around and viewed the page as "Highlights" and there they were :)

When you are signed in to your business page,
Try going to
Manage (top of the page)
Edit Page
Apps
Clcik on the app you are interested in.
Then you can either add the app or go to the app's website to learn more. They all vary a bit.

Some, like North Social's Fan Offer will require membership fees, others, like Constant Contact's Join My List, are free if you are a Constant Contact user.

I'm curious as to what will happen if we don't switch to Timeline on our own.
Will it just switch automatically? I sure prefer the way that it looks now.

So, can we update to the new format of our business page without simultaneously adopting Timeline on our personal profile?

I want to work on graphics for the new business format now, and then tighten privacy settings and edit past items for personal timeline later.

Shayla,
First, if you are moved over to Timeline automatically, the way they say they are going to, you will have a blank space where your timeline photo would be. I would work on that banner now so you have something interesting for people to look at. To start, you can always select a photo from your FB photos and pop it up there. You can crop on the page--very easy, so don't worry about the shape for your first picture.

Rick, FB said they were going to move all personal accounts to Timline a while ago, but have not, so who knows. If I were going to work on one first, it would be the business one.

I had a great social media excahnge yesterday: I got an email from Twitter saying that a customer had tweeted about our shop. I went to the post which said she was going to our store that day, a great place for framing. I re-tweeted her comment, and re-tweeted something she had posted about her art. She re-tweeted that and then headed to our shop to buy a couple hundred dollars worth of matting for a show. I shared her art on my personal FB page. She wrote to thank me, Liked what I said, and so on. This was all very quick, and note that when she re-tweeted anyting about us it went to over 300 of her contacts. This is how social media should work, and it is why I do not discourage customers from becoming personal FB friends. The personal and business can compliment each other in situations like this. Most of our artist customers are on FB and Twitter and it pays to support them with little shout-puts, re-tweets, and so on. Why would they then take thier framing anywhere else?

I see we have 498 Likes on our FB Page. Two more to 500!

That is my intention. What I'm trying to avoid is having my personal page automatically converted to timeline when I implement the business page changes, before I have had a chance to clean house and tweak all the privacy settings on the personal page. So I guess what I'm asking is whether pulling the trigger on the business page also converts the personal page of the business page's administrator (me)?
 Rick

AnneL

SPFG, Supreme Picture Framing God
Well hopefully not since there are 3 of us on our business page and 5 on a page we jointly administer for a professional group we belong to. In fact, I should check to see if any of the admins on that group have converted their personal pages. If they have, then then it would mean converting one does not convert the others automatically.

I switched my business page over to Timeline several weeks ago and so far so good, my personal page remains Timeline-free!

I hate the way they crop images in Timeline. Drives me crazy - the way they have started cropping the thumbnail images in all albums - so no one sees the entire image until clicked upon. Grrr...

Rick Granick

Glad to hear they don't switch all of your stuff at once. I agree about the cropping, Mar. It is abhorrent.

Started cropping?

I don't have Timeline on my personal or business page, but the thumbnails in my photo albums have always been cropped and you don't see the entire image until clicked upon. Don't tell me Timeline crops it even worse.

BTW, My iPad is showing the old format on my business page even though I converted it to Timeline a couple of weeks ago. Same with iPhone.
