Upon scanning slides, is the "This Side Towards Screen" always accurate?

I'm just wondering, because as I am scanning over 700 slides for a client that I'm considering the "This Side Towards Screen" that is printed on one side of the slide frame as the side that faces away from the viewer. But some of the slide images had writing in them and were obviously flipped. I can fix any of them that the client needs, but wanted to see if this is a common error that might have been done when a lab mounted slides. Did they ever pay attention to which way they were mounting the film? Or would some labs have been more acccurate with it than others?

    Not impossible but unlikely.

More likely: It's a slide dupe and it was duped backwards or it's been removed from the mount and replaced backwards.

I've been fooled by looking at words on those tiny little guys. For example if you take a picture from the inside of you store the words on the window might be backwards.

Can you tell the base (shinny)from the emulsion (dull) side? The slide should be right reading when looking through the base side.

If you can't tell the difference there's a good chance it's a slide dupe. It's hard to distinguish the sides on duplicate film.

Aha! I had forgotten to see if I could make out the emulsion side...duh! You would figure after all of my time scanning my own negatives that I would have thought of that ;). Thanks for the tip!

Well, from finding the emulsion side, it appears that some of the types mounts were consistently reversed...guess there was a tech putting them in that most likely didn't know the difference. Will be keeping an eye on it for the remainder of the job.
