Never really done anything else. Started sweeping the shop and running errands for my grandparents when I was six years old. In the ensuing years I worked in the frame shop, did the bookkeeping, became the purchaser for artist materials and other products and then took over the family business. Hit 50 years old and downsized everything to a one person frame shop... me.

PFG, Picture Framing God
Worked in the trades show exhibit building business then for a business who designed and built sales centers for housing developments as well as corporate interiors and the like.

Way back in college I worked at a sewer treatment plant for the summer. Does that count??:vomit::vomit::faintthud:

My favorite ad salesman sold forklifts for awhile. Then he went on to be a big name in Fly Fishing, gave that up, and then Fly Fishing became popular. He'd go to the paper mills and fly fish all afternoon..

One of my former duties was unloading 1cwt (112lbs) trays of little screws by hand. There was about 10 gazillion of them in a tray. Those suckers were heeeeeeaaaaavy.
It broke my heart when I took up framing and actually had to buy some.:icon21:

Paul, this thread is about what you did before you became a framer. Not what you figure you'll do after framing for years.

Before opening my gallery, I worked in concert production in NYC area. Escorting madonna around MSG, sneaking bands out of an arena in my minivan, managing backstage production offices, driving around Jersey looking for a Taco Bell with a hungry Bruce Hornsby as we listen to Grateful Dead tapes, etc.

Before that... worked in my dad's frame shop. :)
Been framing since 1988, and part-time during whatever other jobs I had.

Frame Lady

CGF II, Certified Grumble Framer Level 2
CHEWING GUM sales lady.......my car smelled like bubble gum from all the gum samples we had to carry! Worked for American Chicle div. of Warner Lambert, sold Dentyne, Chiclets, Certs, Trident, Rolaids, Halls, Clorets, introduced Space Crystals, Freshen-up, Dynamints, Bountiful nuts and Bubblicious. Sales rep for 12 years and upper management for the other 8.

All those chewing gum racks at the check out of supermarkets, gas stations, liquor stores and convenience stores had to be installed by someone, so you sold the product and installed the displays.

Best sales job was the $109,000 promotion of Halls cough drops to Costco, as that was when they sold for 99 cents!

Lots of travel, lots of fun...never had to buy Halloween candy!

How do you attach a baby to the backing? Don't they wiggle and wet? How do you preserve them?

SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
Great Question!!!! I have enjoyed reading the answers.....

I have a business degree in secretarial studies. Doesn't mean much in today's world. I learned things like how to use a typewriter and adding machines (not the nice little sharp sitting on the desk right here either). I was really good at the duplicator, though. And shorthand really came in handy.......

Starting out:

Bridal, Customized sewing and alterations (My first venture into self-employment. When I moved away, I gave my business to my cousin, she died and someone else is still working that little business that I started in 1978.)

Taught Shorthand and
Subsitute teaching in a private school (only sub to ever get mentioned in the yearbook for the chemistry experiment the sent smoke through the entire schools vent system. :D)

Administrative assistant in CPA office. No fun there.

Framing for the last 20 years. Found myself at last!!! :D

MGF, Master Grumble Framer
