Where has all the Grumblers gone

Many years ago my former boss got a letter from Social Security asking him why he was still making payments into the account of yours truly when they had me listed as deceased. I had to go the their office with driver's license, birth certificate, etc. to prove that I was still alive.

I wish I had saved that letter, it would be the perfect thing to frame.

The masses have migrated to Facebook and the allure of quick responses in the many and varied framing groups over there. The response time for the G has slowed down considerably since then. :(

I'm also on the FC.
Good people and some good info but you can hear crickets over there.o_O

Yes, the popularity of this forum has diminished a lot in recent years. Now, Facebook and other social-media formats apparently get the attention of many formerly-active Grumblers, but some of us still hang out here occasionally.

While Facebook forums provide almost-real-time communications, some of us still appreciate the extensive archives and easy navigation of forums like the Grumble.

I like the Facebook groups because I like places where everybody is just like me (a righteous genius who loads up a Brinks truck at the close of every work day). Plus, who can resist an environment where the humblebrag has been elevated to an art form?

Everything, every media has its place. I research many things on The G as I have been on it for over 15 yrs.
there are many "fractions" in the industry and Facebook groups can be more closely geared to your "fraction." I think I'm involve in 6+ framing site on Facebook, but active on 3-4...
AS the phone become the computer, I am less at the computer where I find my love of the grumble still takes #1!

Like Sue, I belong to a bunch of framing related groups on facebook, but participate maily in about three.
I still look at the Grumble most days too, and participate here if I have something to offer.
I think the G still has a valuable place in the online framing world, because it is a great resource, has an archive, and a robust search function.
Although you CAN search within facebook groups, it is somewhat harder to find a previous conversation.
 Rick

Also, AFAIK, the Grumble does not know more about us than we know about ourselves, and does not share it with whatever company or nefarious organization that will lay down the cash.

I still check on to the G on a regular basis. It's changed a lot over the however many years I've been on it.
One thing remains consistent though, participants are willing to help without any expectations other than a possible "Thanks!".
I miss the silliness of the early years, but not the politically based cat fighting of the teens. We seem to have grown into an adulthood (most of us) that is more lenient in it's posturing. An old f*rt in an old f*rt grumble.
I do belong to a couple Framing Groups on Facebook. Even traded in my moderator badge here and on Framers Corner for one on a FB Group. Good thing the job description doesn't have any requirements for participation.

I think it's a shame that Facebook as drawn away users. FB has it's advantages, but online forums like this one have great search features and everything is organized . . . there are sections for software, classifieds, business issues, etc.

Plus we can emphasize text if we want to. Or make a bold statement that we can't do on FB. Or be colorful with our comments.

The truth of the matter is that FB is a passing fad that many users will not use anymore for more reason than just one. Tweet & Instagram has replaced FB but there are die hards that won't give it up. I quit FB when I went to my FB account and found a Big Box ad on my page.

Haven't spent more than five minutes on FB in the past year.

I too dropped FB like a bad habit when I received ads from travel agencies while I was looking for vacation spots. I had already closed out FB and was on a site for Cambrils, Spain. The pop up mention that a friend of mine liked to vacation in a totally different area! The only way they could’ve known this lady was my friend was from our FB connection. Thanks for selling personal info FB!

The place just isn't the same, Facebook might not help but other forums have ridden the tide, even continued to progress.

TFG used to have a presence of some sort that has simply gone. A whole load of members either left or just got old or something. At one time the top poster (or if not top, was totally up there - no names but anyway - PaulN) was banned for stuff posted outside of TFG - (F Book) about other members - and that changed my perception of the place at the time. Then the server was changed and it all just didn't look right any more and nor does it now. See it all the time, stuff that works being changed, well, maybe it works for new people ???

Regardless - I would not be the framer I now am were it not for those early TFG years

*Heavy sigh*

It seems that the heyday of the Grumble is long gone. Back when Charles and Ron and Pauly and so many others - back when we had fun. The whole Scarfy Saga. Baer.

We lost a lot of people to the grim reaper (Charles, Dannyboy, Don to name three) and the with all the platform changes we lost all the photos. All the frame designs, all the puppies, and all the kittens!

I miss the days of talking tape measures and song snippets and Hanna's games.

The G is still an ultra-valuable tool within the shrinking framing community and I hope it will continue for a long time.

But a lot of the magic is long gone.

And a lot of the young folks in the multiple framing groups on FB are actually afraid of coming over here.

I do not know what the answer is.

I feel really old now.

*Another heavy sigh*

C'mon gang. Stop being so funereal! The G didn't fall off a cliff. Think of the corporate memory that's still here.

But, then, I discovered the moulding was warped and damaged so I had to take another moulding and paint and stain and distress it to look just like the original moulding.
After spending many hours working all night doing this, the job was finally finished on time and it was perfect.
The next morning, the customer called and said that they would be out of town for the next 3 weeks and could I just store the framing jobs until then?.....
(and then their check bounced....)
To be continued.........

I belong every forum and FB bar 2. Not every one loves me.
I do still prefer the format of forums over facebook. You can see all the topics and go to the ones your interested in and search back easy.
FB you can see something one minute then its gone, and then your trying to find it.
I am only interested in a couple of topics, but facebook will show you every post, add that to any other groups and feeds your are in, and you could scroll for a few minutes and still not see all the posts.
So i think it is a shame there is less activity on here now.
Perhaps we can do what others have done, and post links to the grumble on the FB pages and steer them back.
I am sure they simply forgot how awesome it is here.

I still have the grumble cookbook master copy. Ive probably added to it but didnt post a new one because not enough people seemed interested. It's still up on a website of mine somewhere, as a pdf. probably on www.getthepictureframing/gfaq/

I much prefer the format of forums, as well. FB is in the minute, and an hour later things scroll down and get forgotten. We are under using a great searchable tool, IMO. It's not easy to search on FB, and everything is in one big pile and not in categories. Oh well :(

Agreed about the value of the archive. It's a great search tool.

One thing that remains true is that the Grumble is what we make it. Anyone wanting to share stories, jokes, and have good fun still can.

Hold on! Do you really think people would want to join a forum that includes people like me?

Well then...... start a new Facebook group!. o_O

It's my observation that when someone got a little bent over Grumble moderation they went to Facebook and started a group. When a different person got a little bent with that group they started a second group. And so on.....

Little soap operas everywhere.

I guess I'm part of three FB groups. They're fine but all the same.

Grumble is best! ;)

The Grumble is one of the most valuable tools for a picture framer. Not only is there good advise given to people but the archives from years back will answer many questions we may have. There a tons of good framers here who have experienced just about anything, know where to find a discontinued items, and give fantastic ideas about techniques that we may need to frame the unusual. This forum is great but of course, the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, hopefully framers will begin to remember how valuable of a tool the Grumble is and may return - hopefully that may will turn into they will.

And I agree, it's to bad when something doesn't go exactly your way so you take off and go somewhere else. I learn from disagreements, and I actually like it when someone corrects something I say or do. The comments made on the Grumble and, yes, even the disagreements are great learning tools and IMHO we are lucky to have the Grumble and some of the finest framers in the business here to help guide us.

No Thanks. There is too many as there is.
However, i did just join a new framing FB group which is exactly the sort of group i like. It's all about working on your business not in it.
So i don't have to worry about all the other stuff going on in the other groups, its content i am interested in and nothing else.
But that's also why i like forums, because i can go to just the topics of interest not worry about those i am not.

Mark, for some reason the attached files aren't showing up for me on the Grumble.
When I click on the images, I just get a blank screen.
