Who has a jingle?

When I opened my first retail store some years back, I took a large barter job with a radio station in Hartford. I wanted to use Duke Ellington's "A-Train" as theme music, since my business was A-Frame (One-Day Framing).

That's when I learned about royalties.

The Duke's estate wanted $5000 for use of the song, which was about my entire net worth at the time. I decided instead, to have a jingle made that had a similar sound but would not infringe on either Duke's copyright, or my ability to buy groceries for my family.

I told the jingle company, L&R productions, that I wanted a swing beat (like A-Train), a saxaphone, cause I like sax music (Hey, sometimess you just gotta do what you want.), and a scat thing at the end to make it memorable.

I wrote the lyrics -- all two lines, big deal.

If you are doing radio or TV advertising, a jingle can be a great investment. Mine was $1200, including a holiday version I had made a year later. Today, it will probably cost about $2000, but well worth it.

Why? Because good (and sometimes bad) jingles gets stuck in your head. A jingle is said to increase memory retention by 400%, making your ads more powerful and longer lasting. Think about this: When you learned the alphabet, chances are you didn't learn the letters; you learned the song. And, you remembered it.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has a jingle. Also, if there is an interest, I'll put mine online so you can hear it.

“Come on down to The Framer’s Loft.
If’n you don’t, we’ll get real p***ed off!”

… it’s a work in progress.

Seriously, I haven’t thought too much of a jingle. Most of the local “made for cable” spots that try to use their own music or jingle seem to me to be too strained or get in the way of the message. National ads are, of course, a whole ‘nother kettle of fish.

The one notable exception is a local carpet/hardwood floor place which has as it’s catch phrase (but not a jingle), “A house can be boring without the right flooring”.

It’s hokey, but memorable.

I, for one, would like to hear what you've come up with.

We do have a jingle, originally designed by my Father who also came across royalty issues, and like yourself managed to dodge them. Here's an ad with a "donut" of the jingle:

Recent radio commercial

I wouldn't be without it for radio/tv promotions

Here's the original jingle. As with all jingles, it's in a doughnut format with the middle as background for a voiceover.

Funny thing is that most of my competitors knew my jingle. I would even play pranks and call them, pretending to be from a radio station. I told them if they could sing the A-Frame jingle they'd win $100 and 10 bonus prizes. One thing I learned is that most framers can't sing very well.

I'll dig out the holiday version and post that too.

Wow, Lance, that's swingin'. Was that Harry Connick Junior singing? ;)

To appeal to a younger clientele, we may have to adopt a hip-hop approach:

If you need a picture framed then come to Frameworks
We'll treat you with respect, unlike those other jerks
The methods that we use are safe and archival
So bring your stuff to us and not to our rival
We'll frame your football jersey and your needlepoint too
You'll get some great designs out of our framin' crew
The stylin' of your crib is about to increase
When you get your framing done at Frameworks, yo
Word up- PEACE!

You must have read my mind, Kathy! About a week ago I was thinking that the next verse would be:

So don't be callin' women names like Hos and B*tch*s,
Just come on in and frame your baby's counted cross stitches.

 Rick
