Hi Folks,

Quick question: would you advise on getting Wizard machine as a startup or is it better to get a manual mat cutter for the beginning and upgrade it later? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

There's merit to understanding how a manual matcutter works, and it would have uses other than cutting mat windows , but a computerized mat cutter (CMC) would improve your matting capabilities & efficiency from day one.

Why Wizard? I suggest you consider at least Valiani and Gunnar, as well.

One more question: which of these machines would be the best space-saver?
 
Every CMC will take up about equal space. I have a Valiani and I have the cutting table positioned at an angle so it doesn't take up as much space as a cutting table that is flat. I do believe that Wizard & Gunner can also be adjusted at an angle. Like Jim said, check out Valiani & Gunnar. I did a lot a research and found that the Valiani fit the bill perfectly for me and since I have had the Valiani, I have had no problems, that's over 6 years now and all other framers that I know that own a Valiani says the same, zero problems.

I would say that it depends on how much business you expect, and whether you are experienced with a CMC or a Manual Mat Cutter.

CMCs are a large investment, but they are also a a time saver.
In my opinion, it is easier to learn how to use a CMC, than a manual mat cutter.
It is much easier to cut a special design with a CMC.

Most manual mat cutters take up less space than CMCs.
 
Wizard has a lease program as well, which can be a big advantage when cash is tight. However, I second the opinion that you don't really have to have a CMC to open your business, and there is merit to learning to do it on a manual mat cutter. Plus manual ones are much less expensive.
