For applying putty, we use a plastic tool used for sculpting clay.

I used to have a handful of pop sticks which I had whittled to various shapes for applying filling putty to awkward places.
I use plastic palette knives for applying filler and stuff.
The best tools come in sets of five and are conveniently located on the extreme ends of your arms.

Plastic putty knives are also useful for fabric-wrapping mats, to help smooth the fabric around the bevel and to the back of the mat.
