WouThe arrogance of some distributors

Larry Peterson

On Thursday I received my weekly delivery of supplies from a RI based distributor who shall remain nameless.

When I checked the pricing, it all seemed high so I checked it against their online catalog. I have used this distributor since LJ dropped crescent, however long ago that was. I was initially setup for their price break 2 and have been at that level since then. My most recent order had no pricing discount at all. As an example a 48x96 sheet of acrylic went from $157.59 to $173.01. Everything was at list with no discounts.

So I called them. Oh yeah, they said. We have been reviewing all accounts and have eliminated discounts for underachieving accounts. So when was I notified about this, I said. Oh we are too busy to do that, they said. :fire::fire::fire:

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Would that I would have alternatives.

Seeing as how there is only one distributor in RI that delivers on a Thursday... I find it interesting that nowhere on their site can I find a price of $157.59 let alone $173.01. On my page, a sheet of .118 48x96 plexi is $79.87.

Possible that you aren't even classified as a commercial framing business which is what is required of them to get the usual wholesale prices.
If you don't order enough to qualify as a real framing business, then you are considered as full retail.

Oops. I should have said "a 48x96 sheet of UV/NG acrylic went from $157.59 to $173.01"

$79.87 is the price I now pay for regular 48x96 acrylic up from $69.89.

My volume isn't significant but at around 5 figures a year I should qualify as a real framing business. I only buy supplies from them, no moulding.

I've had calls from distributors asking if I am still trading. Merely because I haven't ordered for a while.
Some I have had accounts with for - well, a looooong time. It's not that I am not busy. I'm busier nowadays
than I ever was. But if they don't stock what I want to buy, is it my shortcoming?

Thing is, if a supplier is in a position where they have a monopoly they do tend to capitalise on it.
If there was an alternative supplier then I would switch forthwith. But sometimes they have you by the proverbials. :D

my suggestion might be to look at consolidating vendors to as few as possible. By 'bundling' volume you have greater opportunities to negotiate better pricing

my observation was most framers could easily do that

Larry, I buy that size plexi from both Acme plastics and Omega, both are 42 per sheet.

You are buying 48x96 FF-3 Framing Grade Acrylic with a thickness of .118" for $42.00 a sheet?

What quantities do you have to buy for this price break?

A similar thing happened with me at G&G/IM. But they were doing this over and over and over. They said essentially "we want to make more money", but I am paraphrasing.

They were surprised they went from doing weekly business with us to once maybe every 4 months.

As far as I know, FF3 doesn't come in .100". The closest is .098".

What exactly are you buying? FF3? Something else? Curious minds and all that.
