Backup is now done at 3PM EDT. You may find the server down for up to two minutes at that time.

You can add me to the list of framer's that just found out . . .

. . . that there is a Michaels opening up just down the street.

I have to say that if it were not for the wealth of great advise and positive expirences found here on TG, I might be more upset or unsure of what the future might be.

My gratitude to all those that participate in the dialog about BB's and the like. I always used to read those threads and be glad it wasn't me, yet. When I read the business section and saw the Michaels' item, it took all of 4 seconds to get over the suprise and remember that it is far from the end of the world.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

You're absolutely right, Eric. I'll bet they're hiring.

I a couple of months, you'll be getting a lot of business from M's customers who had a job done badly that they want fixed.

You might think about advertising "framing corrections".

Get this - A businesswoman came in with her assistant to have some things framed for the office. She had a few regional photographs and a poster. Then she brings out a rendering of a shopping plaza that her developing company engineered and brokered - it is where the Michaels is going.

She commented on the project and that the final space to go into contract was an art supply store. And then she laughed and said "notice I didn't mention framing, 'cause I don't consider what they do to be framing'.

Funny how things work. She could turn out to be a great client. She spent very freely for office type stuff.

I managed to grow my shop with a LeeWards-turned-Michaels in my backyard, plus two long established shops(which are now gone, BTW). When Michaels closed a few years ago, I yearned for them to return. The first couple of months after their move, I had some of their "customers" come in. Believe me, you wouldn't want them.

Whenever my customers mention "M's", it not with respect. They equate "M's" with cheap=nothing special. I guess it would be like us comparing McDonalds to a good steak house.

Thanks Jerry - you are onto something. I just moved into this location this year and it's closer to that area of developement then my previous one. Ultimately its better and for the reason you suggested - there is now a Target and a Bed, Bath & Beyond all set to go in within a mile of each other. And me.

This area never supported that kind of building, it all happened 15 miles east and west of here. Now as you suggest the demo's here are being noticed.

Just talked to another framer in town about this and he is panicing. He want's to print fliers that say "I'm cheaper than Michael's", and run a $19.99 poster special.

What a contrast to the dialog here on TG!

micheals is really known more for thier crafts adn such, that is why the frame area is in the back, it only makes up 25% of the stores profit, and thier customers tend to be cheap, petty, and want the impossible for a wal mart price, so thier is something to be said for micheals customers, alot fo them are horribly rude and i wounld never really want thier business, but the up side is they screw up ALOT, and **** alot of their customers off, so they bring thier shotty jobs to the independents and will pay pretty much anything to get it fixed, prints plus is another example of horrible work.
