I have been able to stay extremely busy during the recession (recovery) and at times use a sign on the door stating "No Rush Orders Until Further Notice".

Even when the sign is not posted people can see there are hundreds of pieces getting all manner of work done to them. Nearly every day I hear about how lucky I am to be busy. I'm wondering if others all around the country hear how lucky they are.

I know they mean well but it is kind of insulting that it is luck and not skill & hard work. Do others get insulted when these comments are made or do you consider yourself lucky.

How do others respond to the statement. I tell them it is hard work, long hours and a huge financial commitment.

I just respond that I certainly do appreciate how hard we have to work.

"You're busy! Wow, well you're the only one around here! Boy, are you lucky!"

"Ahhh, yes, well it's very hard work but we certainly do appreciate what we have. We'll never complain!"

Then they look at you like you just said aliens appeared on the White House lawn.

I think it's kind of a no-win because the people who are likely to say something like that want you to commiserate about the doom and gloom and some of them even resent you taking credit for your own success.

My situation is a bit different than most of you guys..

Lately its been feast or famine.
When i'm BUSY....... I'm super swamped and busy.....

Everyone that asks says.... "Well thats great! Your so lucky!!"
Then comes the...... HOLY COW!!!How am I going to do all of this......
and have a baby here and make sure I get my other kids everywhere too......
It's so not easy....... at all.
I'd like to say there's skill involved...... but this week everyone has been sick.... soooooo ALL ORDERS ARE LATE!

I think when most people ask.......... and YOU say its slow or whatever...... they just want to say ...... "Oh.... its the economy"....... :faintthud: DUH! Ya think?

But I do consider myself lucky........ that I've held on this long... almost 5 years.... through the crappiest of times!

In a way I consider myself lucky. I am lucky that there are forms of marketing that I would never have thought of on my own. I am lucky that I have a partner and family support system that allow me to take calculated risks and commit myself totally to making my business work. I am lucky that my partner stumbled across an awesome resource like the Grumble (where I’ve gotten several of my ideas). I am lucky that I don’t have a great desire for material wealth; it made me more capable of getting through the harder times until the business did become successful. I am lucky that I have a drive and determination that a lot of people don’t. I am lucky that I am healthy and capable of the kind of work that is required for this type of business.

It’s a lot of hard work and persistence, but there is a little luck involved, depending on what you consider luck. I don’t think that people who say these things are trying to detract from the amount of work you do. They’re just thoughtlessly making conversation.

    I agree.

When someone asks if we are busy I say, "Sure am!... and I appreciate it. Keeps me out of trouble and out of the bars!".

What's that old sports addage? "I'd rather be lucky than good."

luck is the result of hard luck and preperation. No truer words have ever been said.

I wanna be the CNN producer who won $100,000 in the hot lotto 3 months ago and then won a cool million in the lottery last week. She sure must have a some kind of luck.

My best luck comes when I least expect it.

I really like this!! We are lucky, but we do work very hard for it. When I'm feeling snark I have to stop myself from saying things like, "I live an an RV and work for about a penny and hour!" LOL But I love my life and what I have.

I'm glad you didn't need to resort to living in those foam core boxes. Good thing you can park your home in the store parking lot so that penny per hour doesn't get eaten up in gas to and from the store.

    LOL!! YES!!

Our landlord did ask if we were going to live in the shop. I said, "There's NO SHOWER!" He said, "Didn't stop the last people." Ewe.

In FL the RV was in the shop parking lot, in the back behind the building. It was actually kinda nice.
