Question Repaint frame

I have two identical vintage ornate gold frames from the 1930's. Some paint is rubbed off on several of the decorations. The under color is white. I assume gesso. I wish to revive the frames with new gold paint. what color gold do I look for? Do I need to cover the old gold with gesso first? Or can I paint directly over the old gold color? These are not gold leaf frames. Not a shiny gold but a bright gold color. Maybe age has dull it slightly. Thanks for help.

Prime the white bits with a dab of acrylic paint. Colour not critical, but usually Red Oxide is the norm.
This will give a good base for the gold. Gesso is very porous.
Probably the best colour for the gold is 2.5 tone. Equivalent to Liberon 'Trianon', which is available as
gilt cream and also gilt varnish. You might need to tone the newly retouched parts with a suitable
diluted acrylic colour or a dab of dark wax and a buff-up with a yellow duster. 😉

Thank you. Very helpful. I wish the stuff you mentioned wasn't so expensive.

You could also use a tube a of bright gold acrylic and mix it to the proper shade with some earth tones like Raw Umber or Burnt Umber. I use these acrylics almost every day. (Well, I did until I had to close my shop two days ago . . .)

Sorry you had to close shop. Hopefully it will be a short closure. Thanks for you advice, sounds easy. I like easy fixes.
