Chopper woes

First, my thanks to all who participate in this forum. A lot of us are learning and getting great ideas from you.

My question; how can I keep the chopper from knocking the outside bottom corner gesso off? I have good sharp blades, have made every adjustment I know of and continue to occasionally have this problem. Also someone asked under another topic if we still spray our dust cover paper. Do we? And what is our favorite method for doing so?

I know this isn't going to be what you wanted to hear but, sometimes even after doing every thing you can a CHOPPER is just not the best tool to cut Gesso coated moulding.
I have heard of framers placeing a piece of tape at the cutting appex and cutting through it .However a saw cuts this far better,not to mention if the moulding has any hollows on the back side.A chopper needs to have the secction being cut supported in order to cut clean .Any gaps at all will tear especially if the moulding is Gessoed.
I don't spray dust covers anymore but when I framed smaller pieces I have used a laundary sray bottle filled with water ,finely misting the cover after attaching it to the frame and when dry the cover drew tight like a drum.

Place a piece of clear (no knots) 1 X 2 pine behind the moulding. By moving the edge of the moulding away from the end joint of the blades in some cases makes a better cut. Does not work in all cases and the moulding needs to be hand measured as the scale would be off.

Buy a good 12 inch cutoff saw and blade for that type of work. That better advise.
