SGF, Supreme Grumble Framer
So I did some practicing, then got to do my first "fine mesh fabric" object mounting for a customer.
I followed Jim Miller's book: The Complete Guide to Shadowboxes and Framing Objects (pgs 49/50).
Here's an illustrated picture story of my process:
The objects: A formed 6"x6"x1.25" bees wax block with bee figures, and a 3.25"x2"x1.5" cabochon with antique bee illustration.
Experimenting with layout and measuring positions:
Attaching tulle to 8ply rag board with acrylic gel medium, under wax block:
Because of the weight of the wax block, I chose to use tulle (over silk or polyester) for its extra strength.
Aligning objects and mounting with EVA hot glue:
I used scrap foam cut to previously determined spacing as alignment guides when gluing the objects.
Adding cap frame, liners and glazing:
We had to get creative with stacking because there are no gold antique-style frames of sufficient depth from Larson Juhl (my only supplier) that appealed to the customer.
And the finished project!
Frame Recipe:
Base frame: Confetti Gold 140651
Cap frame: Allegra Antique Gold 284712
Mount Matt: Empire Gold B848512
Glazing: TrueVue UltraVue72
I officially have a new tulle in by framing skills toolbox.
Thanks Jim!
