Can anyone please offer advice on how to mount an autographed men's sportcoat and sunglasses in a 30 x 40 shadowbox?

Hi Shhirlee, and welcome to the G.

Sewing the garment in place is pretty much the default method. Using cotton thread, it can be sewn to a variety of rigid backings, depending on the degree of preservation desired, or to a subframe that has fiberglass screening stretched on to it with a fabric over that (this would require a fairly deep shadowbox).
This is a simple, if time-consuming, process. The sunglasses can be sewn in place as well.

Another option is a hanger mechanism inside the frame. This could be an actual clothes hanger, or one fashioned from clear acrylic. Additional tacking might be needed to secure the garment in place.

Best of luck with your project.

Why did you select that specific size? Did you actually measure this garment on a flat surface? It is the same thing with sports jerseys, the garments come in many sizes depending on who the garment was worn by. The garment should be displayed so that it doesn't look squished into the frame.

One thing regarding a "sports coat", they have long sleeves unlike a sports jersey and as a result do not normally fold over the sleeves. This is the same with the display of military uniforms.

Several years ago I shadowbox framed a large man's outdoor jacket, I used a combination of:
1 - a foam board form cut to fit the torso to keep it's shape
2 - a hanger to support the weight, hooked through an eye bolt secured through the top rail of the frame
3 - spot stitches at the wrist bands to keep the arms in place, and at the waist band to prevent the whole thing from swaying while being transported.

Seeing your profile shows Fabric and Textile Art as your business, you probably have most of what you need for supplies to perform sewing mounting methods.

A good source of research:

If you are going to be doing more than the occasional Textile mounting, then you may consider obtaining other tools designed specifically for the purpose:

Both are also members/sponsors of the Grumble :)
