Built if for smaller frames. Big (for me) frames? Just add clamps!

I have a similar spline jig, but the part i hate is sanding and/or planing them down. I watched some instagram post where some Chinese operation was whipping off spline corners 10/second and figured I would try to do something similar. It’s pretty darn close.

To do the opposite side, I just turn the frame over and then run it through. Super simple. The jig actually doesnt ride on the t-track, it is stationary and tightly fit, so the frame just glides along. I have some tape to make any micro-adjustments. Every once in a while I may get a slight blade cut too deep, but it’s super shallow and very easy to sand down to perfection.

Cool! I just cut them off close on my band saw, then finish sand (the frame needs it anyway) on my benchtop belt sander. Works well for me. I've been using the sander (its just a WEN brand...everybody makes them) for quite awhile. Start with 80, then 100, 120, 150 down to sometimes 220. This shadow box is 3inches deep. Its the final
edge of the frame I started this thread with. Finished it with Tung Oil.

We use a bandsaw for Phase 1. We use a fence that keeps the moulding about 1/32" from the blade. Very simple - just a piece of whatever (we are currently using a piece of 1/4" or so Lexan) with a small notch to go around the blade (this is on the "wrong" side of the blade compared to a normal fence). Impossible to hit the molding with the blade, and guaranteed a very small amount of spline left to sand off. Then for Phase 2 it's off to the horizontal belt sander to take the remainder off. Granted, Phase 2 only works for smaller frames, say up to around 48". Unless you happen to have a very large sander and/or are very skilled...

Pics to follow if requested.

I could add: we do orders of 500-1000 frames this way. Just working on confirming an order for 265 to be completed in the next 2 months.
