No, really. The last two boxes of acid-free foamcore I've received smell strongly of fish.

I don't remember it ever smelling of, well, anything before.

Is this just the natural perfume of foamcore, or is my vendor situated near a fishmonger?

Like CB, my guess would be that the odor is coming from the cardboard box, and not from the foam board itself. I've had similar experiences lately with cardboard boxes containing matboard, glass, and other things.

If the source of the odor really is the foam board, then something is seriously wrong with its chemistry, and you ought to send it back for exchange. Or, if the box is the problem, pitch it into the dumpster and be happy.

Foam board does have a distinctive smell especially when it is in a heat press, but it doesn’t smell like mackerel to me. There is, however, a very strong smell of formaldehyde with GatorBoard that gives me a wicked headache.

Just a guess: They may use the same or similar chemicals in the manufacturing process which just haven’t had an opportunity to dissipate.

Can you leave an open box outside for a while to see if that gets rid of the odor?

Odors

It is well worth paying attention to what our noses notices, since this is the best chemical detector available to us.
Something that smells fishy is likely to be a protein and is more likely to come from adhesive than from paper. The expanded polystyrene of the core of a foam centered board may give of quiet another odor. The smell of styrene monomer can be quite strong when a box of foam centered board is first opened and it is not surprising to hear that it can be caused by heating. Whether this represents any hazard to paper or the media used on it has not been studied, but it does not appear to have been observed, to date.

We were having 100+ degree weather for several straight weeks a little bit ago, perhaps the boxes of FC were getting cooked in the distribution areas, trucks?... The box itself did smell bad, the foamcore always seems to retain a bit of the smell but it does fade for the most part.

But, ew :icon20:

I noticed that too, after I bought a different brand back in the spring
as my supplier had discontinued the one I was using
